How to get around
What see
- 1 Giovo Castle (Jaufenburg). Traces of a prehistoric site were found on the hill overlooking the town. In the Middle Ages the road to Passo Giovo passed through it and for this reason the Lords of Passiria, ministerial of the counts of Tyrol who administered justice for the latter in Val Passiria, had a fortified castle built around 1200. In the chronicles of the time it was described as "magnificently frescoed" and with five floors with a mighty tower, dating back to the 12th century.
- When the family died out (1383), the castle passed by marriage to the Fuchs von Fuchsberg of Appiano. The golden age of the castle began, visited by actors and minstrels. A slow but steady decline of the structure and of the family, which lost all assets in 1738, led to its ruin.
- In 1828 the manor, already destroyed, was bought by a farmer who made it into a farm.
- Today the main tower has been restored and can be visited. Inside are the marble coats of arms of the Lords of Passiria and Lords Fuchs von Fuchsberg. Some Renaissance frescoes from 1538 have been recovered, by Bartlmä Dill Riemenschneider (son of Tilman Riemenschneider), and it is one of the seats of the Passiria Museum. The history of the castle and justice in Passiria are treated, as well as the castle families.
