Schwarzenbek (Low German: Swattenbek) is a small town in Schleswig-Holstein, east of Hamburg, in the heart of the Duchy of Lauenburg.

background

The town of Schwarzenbek is located in the Geest in the south-east of Schleswig-Holstein, away from well-known tourist attractions. If you are looking for undisturbed relaxation in nature, you will come to the largest contiguous forest area in Schleswig-Hostein, the Sachsenwald, in the northwest bordering fully at his expense.

Anyone looking for a place for a relaxing and varied holiday will get their money's worth in Schwarzenbek. However, you need a bit of initiative and flexibility, because the tourist offer is hardly developed and only at second glance does Schwarzenbek develop its own attraction for tourists. However, due to its central location and its proximity to a large number of well-known holiday destinations, it is ideally located for tourists for a stopover when passing through or as a central starting point to many different attractions in the area. Furthermore, the city has some charming discoveries in store for those who feel comfortable off the beaten tourist path.

The linchpin of local public transport is the Schwarzenbek railway station There is also the central bus station (ZOB) where all regional bus lines stop, the taxi ranks and covered bike racks and parking spaces for those who change trains.

For those who need a ticket for public transport, it is helpful to know that Schwarzenbek is in tariff zone 706, Ring D des HVV lies.

Train station and ZOB

At his train station, it becomes apparent that many people, whose place of residence is Schwarzenbek, commute to Hamburg to work. For them, the station is an entry and exit point, but not a place to stay. The station has no public buildings of its own, just a few shelters with benches on the platforms. Tickets can be obtained from the ticket machines on the platforms. Both the kiosk and the public toilets, which are still shown on some cards, are often closed (as of 09/2018).

Magistrates' House

The magistrate's house with Justice garden

The magistrate's house, built in the late Baroque style, is located in the middle of the justice garden, which is characterized by its old trees. The listed building and restored in 1988, as well as the associated park, is now used as a venue for social and cultural events and as a restaurant. In addition, weddings and private events take place.

The approximately 250-year-old building was built during the reign of the Electorate of Hanover from 1765 to 1767. Originally, both the domicile and the office of the clerk were located here under one roof. In addition to the main building, there was also a barn, a carriage shed and a horse stable with a servants' room.Wikipedia: Schwarzenbek, accessed on February 22, 2018 It was only about 100 years later that the administration was separated from the administration of justice and a separate district court was built in Schwarzenbek. From 1870 to 1968, the magistrate's house only served as a residence for the Schwarzenbeck magistrates.Program flyer district judge house, accessed on February 22, 2018

The magistrate's house can also be visited from the inside during the opening times of the catering and public events. The restored half-timbered rooms and the small, squat vaulted cellar are well worth a visit. The exhibitions and cultural events that take place there have made it nationally famous. So far, works by Christian Modersohn, Harald Duwe, Günter Grass, Vicco von Bülow, Heinrich Vogeler, A. Paul Weber and Klaus Staeck have been exhibited there. The Duchy of Lauenburg Foundation has been responsible for the district judge's house since January 2005.

St. Francis Church

Francis Church

After almost a year of construction, the neo-Gothic Franziskuskirche was inaugurated as a Protestant church on October 20, 1895. It replaced the half-timbered church of the same name, which stood in the same place and was built in 1748 and demolished in 1894 due to dilapidation. Today's church, with a high tower by Lauenburg standards, was built by the master builder Johann Prösch according to the plans of the Hamburg architect Pieper.

Inside the church there are numerous art treasures, such as the bells from 1628 and 1645 and the oil paintings showing pastors Wagner and Genzken. A copy of a painting by the Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens shows the Lamentation of Christ and dates from 1650. There are also gilded chalices from the 17th and 18th centuries, wafer boxes and boxes, a silver communion jug and an altar candlestick from 1603.

The original altar windows, which showed biblical scenes and depicted the Reformation story, were destroyed in World War II. After the Second World War they were walled up until they were reopened in 1993 and redesigned with depictions of St. Francis.

Model railway system

Eisenbahnfreunde Schwarzenbek e.V. claims to be the largest model railway association in northern Germany with around 190 members. The association not only offers visitors the opportunity to visit the facility, but also to control some models themselves.

Three model railroad layouts are set up in the club hall on the 650 square meter site. The system includes:

A system on a scale of 1: 160, the N gauge. One of the highlights of the systems in the summer to early autumn season is a model of the Hamburg Altona depot with a double turntable and a locomotive shed for 50 locomotives. In addition, there is a small mountain station and a freight station with 6 tracks, as well as an AC system on a scale of 1:87 of the H0 gauge. The system includes the - fictitious - Osnabrück-Fleddertor train station and an underground car park. A 1:87 scale DC system in H0 gauge. The facility includes a landscape in the style of Mecklenburg and Brandenburg, a valley spanned by bridges and a large train station.[1], Homepage of Eisenbahnfreunde Schwarzenbek e.V., accessed: April 6, 2018

Practical advice

trips

Duchy of Lauenburg

The flat landscape with the large forests, meadows and fields is particularly suitable for day trips by bike, which also allow you to visit the destination extensively. The following cities in the vicinity are particularly suitable for this.

Lures towards the east Lauenburg with its cozy half-timbered old town on the Elbe-Lübeck Canal. Starting in Schwarzenbek, you can reach the city of Lauenburg by bike via Gülzow, Juliusburg and Krüzen, or alternatively take the 8860 bus, which is located south Geesthacht on the banks of the Elbe. You can start by bike in Schwarzenbek, via Kollow and Hamwarde to Geesthacht, alternatively with the bus route 8870. If you plan accordingly, visits to Lauenburg and Geesthacht can easily be combined into a day tour Aumühle with the Bismark Mausoleum, various museums and attractions where you can go by bike through the Sachsenwald got. Alternatively with the regional train RB11. If you can make it a little further, you can go up Bergedorf drive and visit both the castle and the old town Mölln If you want to visit the east by bike, you should find out a suitable route in advance. A little fitness should be trained in order to make the return tour relaxed. All others can take the 8810 bus to the same destination in around half an hour. The Möllner Seenplatte invites you to take an excursion on foot: the old town with its cathedral of the island city Ratzeburg lies in the middle of the Ratzeburg lake and has a special attraction due to its location. The distance from Schwarzenbek is really only suitable as a day tour for trained cyclists and for others it is recommended at most as a multi-day tour. Alternatively, you can take the RE1 to Büchen with a change to the regional train in the direction of Lübeck. (Status: 01/2018)

Hamburg

Visiting the metropolis Hamburg is an absolute must for a holiday in Schwarzenbek, it is best to plan several days for it. The regional express in the direction of Hamburg Hbf takes you every hour and within 20 minutes to Hamburg Central Station and later back again.

It is definitely worth buying a HVV 9 a.m. day ticket for EUR 12.40 for individuals or a 9 a.m. group day pass for EUR 23.60 for 4 rings (A-D) for several travelers. These are cheaper than single tickets for a return trip and can also be used for buses and trains in Hamburg all day. Incidentally, on weekends and on public holidays these apply from midnight, and on working days only from nine. The group day ticket is valid for up to 5 people, but is worth it for two or more.

Attention: The regional train does not go to Hamburg! You then have to change to the S-Bahn in Aumühle and plan a lot more time.

Tickets can be obtained from the machines on the platforms of Schwarzenbek train station or at a reduced price via the HVV app.

Driving the same route by car can easily take an hour due to the traffic and then a parking space has to be found. In other words, it's just not worth taking the car.

Luneburg

The smallest of the surrounding Hanseatic cities is Luneburg, which spoils its visitors with a charming old town and is no less attractive than its two big sisters. For the journey from Schwarzenbek, the car or the train are equally suitable. The duration is around three quarters of an hour and the parking fees in central parking garages can quickly reach the amount of a day group ticket.

By car you drive along the German holiday route "Alte Salzstraße" on the federal road B207 via Lauenburg to Lüneburg.

The journey by regional train to Lüneburg main station requires a change in Büchen. Lüneburg also belongs to the HVV area, from Schwarzenbek you need a ticket for three rings (D-F). First you choose the RE towards Büchen / Schwerin / Rostock and change in Büchen to the RE towards Lüneburg. A single trip costs 5.20 EUR, for a day trip with a return trip, but the individual traveler travels cheaper with a 9 o'clock day ticket for 10.20 EUR. Even for two and groups of up to 5 people travel the cheapest with the 9 o'clock group day ticket for 18.30 EUR. Both tickets are valid on weekdays from 9 a.m., but all day on weekends and public holidays. (As of 01/2018)

Lübeck and Travemünde

The Hanseatic city is undoubtedly a pearl among the tourist destinations Lübeck with its dreamy old town island, as well as its district Travemünde with the Baltic Sea beaches on the Bay of Lübeck.

The 45-minute drive by car is best for a trip to Lübeck. You leave Schwarzenbek on the B207 in the direction of Mölln and follow the main road to Lübeck. The parking garage Falkenstraße, which is connected directly to the old town island by a pedestrian bridge, or the parking spaces on Kanalstraße are particularly suitable as parking options from this direction.

If you don't want to travel by car, you can take the train instead, but you should inform yourself well in advance. The journey takes a little more than an hour if you take the RE in the direction of Büchen / Schwerin / Rostock to Büchen and then change to the RE in the direction of Lübeck Hbf. Be careful not to accidentally choose a connection via Hamburg Hbf, as this takes longer and costs more.

You should also be careful when choosing the right ticket. It is important to know that you are traveling with the nah.sh transport association and that the Schleswig-Holstein tariff applies on this connection. With the nah.sh tickets, the entire itinerary, including buses, can be booked on the connection. It is therefore generally recommended to connect Schwarzenbek to stop Koberg, Lübeck can be solved, because then the bus traffic on the most important axis can also be used in Lübeck. All the tickets described below can be obtained from the ticket machines on the platforms of Schwarzenbek train station.

A single traveler without a BahnCard is the cheapest way to travel with a nah.sh day ticket for EUR 24.00. This ticket can be used as often as you like on the route. In Lübeck you can also take the bus lines between the train station, the Holstentor and the Koberg. A single traveler with a BahnCard is the cheapest way to travel with two single tickets from nah.sh for a total of EUR 18.60, as the BahnCard is credited on a pro-rata basis. In Lübeck, however, the bus can only be used for a return trip. But that should not be an obstacle for very few. For 2-3 people with children or grandchildren up to 14 years of age, the cheapest trip is with the Schleswig-Holstein Ticket from Deutsche Bahn for EUR 31.00-34.00. This ticket can be obtained from the machine under "Länderickets" and Not under nah.sh. It is valid for any number of train journeys in Schleswig-Holstein and thus has the great advantage that theoretically a journey by train to Travemünde would be included in the price. Lübeck alone has so many attractions that it is questionable whether both destinations should be visited in one day. In addition, it should be noted with this ticket that no buses may be used! For an excursion with 3-5 paying people, the nah.sh group day ticket for EUR 34.00 is the best choice. Like the day ticket, this is also valid for any number of journeys and also includes buses. When driving to Travemünde Strand you have to plan around 1h 45min. The same applies to the choice of tickets as to Lübeck: A single traveler without a BahnCard pays EUR 31.00 for a day ticket for nah.sh, an individual with a BahnCard pays EUR 24.90 for two single tickets. 2-3 people with children or grandchildren up to 14 Years ago, the cheapest way to travel is with the Schleswig-Holstein Ticket from Deutsche Bahn. 4-5 people, on the other hand, choose the nah.sh group day ticket for the route for EUR 36.40 (as of 01/2018)
