Sequals is a center of the Friuli Venezia Giulia.

To know

The town is known for being the birthplace of Primo Carnera (Sequals, 25 October 1906 - Sequals, 29 June 1967), a legendary Italian boxer.

Geographical notes

The municipal area is characterized by the presence of morainic hills, enclosed between the Meduna and Cosa streams.

Background

The name Sequals seems to derive from sub colles, that is, at the foot of the hill; other sources indicate instead septem colles, seven hills.

There Villa de Subcollibus in 1184 it belonged to the diocese of Concordia and was given a fief to the noble Shömberg or Sonemberc family of Germanic origin, who began construction of the Solimbergo castle in the Ottonian era. In 1196 the villa of Sequals was given to Almerico di Castelnovo who completed the construction of the castle.

In 1976 the town was devastated by the Friuli earthquake, which caused enormous collapses and damage.

Primo Carnera's house in Sequals has been transformed into a museum; collects memorabilia and objects that tell the life of the great boxing champion, from childhood in poverty to world fame thanks to his performances in boxing. 
• . Built in the fifteenth century, it has some nineteenth-century renovations. The building is characterized by a particular Baroque style facade added in the 19th century; the portal by Giovanni Antonio Pilacorte and the altarpieces by Gasparo Narvesa are noteworthy 
• 46.1623912.890961 Villa Savorgnan, via G.Ciani 33 (to Lestans). One of the few examples of a Venetian villa in this area. It dates back to the second half of the sixteenth century and was the summer residence and jurisdictional seat of the fiefdom of the Savorgnan counts in Lestans, of which a branch is part of the famous Foscarini family of Venice and the Zanutto of Prata. The fiefdom passed to the Savorgnan Counts in 1511 until the Napoleonic period.

On the façade it has a raised central projecting block, with stone corners, crowned by a pediment with a small rose window in the center, a mullioned window with a balcony on the first floor and a mullioned window on the second floor; on the ground floor is a simple arched portal framed in stone between two windows.

Since 1991, on the initiative of the municipality of Sequals, the villa houses a archaeological collection, with objects found in the area between Meduna and Tagliamento (municipalities of Sequals, Meduno, Travesio is Pinzano al Tagliamento) in the course of archaeological prospecting investigations and excavations authorized and coordinated by the superintendence for archaeological heritage of Friuli Venezia Giulia. The objects kept in the collection range chronologically from prehistoric times to later periods with medieval and Renaissance objects from the castles of Toppo and Spilimbergo and a small collection of Renaissance ceramics from an archaeological excavation in the Crûz locality of Castelnovo.

The villa's archaeological collection is part of the "Lis Aganis" museum network, a regional ecomuseum of the Friulian Dolomites.

It can be assumed that, where this chapel once stood and where the church still stands today, in a very remote time there was a castle, to which some remains located on the hill could belong. It is not known with certainty when the primitive church of Sequals was built, but the year in which it was erected as an independent parish church with respect to the parish church of Travesio is known precisely, ie 1449. In 1500 the church was renovated or rebuilt; this building was severely damaged by lightning in 1679 and, as it was too narrow for the needs of the population, instead of restoring it, it was preferred to do it from scratch. : The current parish church was built starting from 1740 and, in 1775, it was equipped with the bell tower; it was consecrated on 23 September 1810. It suffered some damage during the earthquake of 1812, others during that of 1976. Finally it was remodeled in 2001.

Inside it preserves a beautiful baptismal font by Giovanni Antonio Pilacorte.
