Sromowce Niżne is a mountain village on Dunajec below the reservoirs Czorsztyn and Sromowce, in the voivodeship Lesser Poland in the southeast Poland between Pienines and the Zips. The place is on the southern edge of the Pienin National Park and immediately before the Dunajec breakthrough through the Pienines.

The place was first recorded in 1323 on the royal trade route to Hungary, the Via Regia, mentioned. As early as 1350 is between the villages Sromowce Wyżne upstream and Sromowce Niżne distinguished downstream. The village belonged to the Clarissin monastery in Stary Sącz. Already in the Middle Ages and the early modern times, the inhabitants went rafting on the Dunajec, where they took wood from the Tatra Mountains on the Dunajec direction Vistula shipped, where it is then loaded with wheat and other agricultural products up to Danzig was spent. The Tatra wood was used in Gdansk for shipbuilding and the wheat was exported to the Netherlands and Flanders in particular. Since the early 19th century, however, tourists began to book the raft trip through the breakthrough. Some raft descents through the Dunajec Gorge begin in the village, but most of them are already upstream in Sromowce Wyżne. In 1996 the reservoirs were flooded, which significantly reduced the risk of flooding and regulates the amount of water in the breakthrough.

By plane

The international Krakow Airport located northwest and the international Rzeszów Airport northeast of Sromowce Niżne.

By train

The nearest major train station is in Nowy Targ and is by train from Krakow reachable.

By bus

Regional buses go to Kraków, Nowy Targ and the surrounding areas. Minibuses bring the tourists who make the raft trips after they finish from Szczawnica or Krościenko nad Dunajcem back to the parking lot in town.

In the street

The connecting road leads to Czorsztyn and from there either direction Nowy Sącz in the east or Nowy Targ in the West.

The place is easy to explore on foot or by bike. Since the place is in the mountains, it is quite hilly and a certain level of fitness does not hurt.

Sromowce Niżne is ideal for water sports and hiking. The shortest route to the main ridge of the Pieninen begins here Three crowns to Sokolica with breathtaking views of the breakthrough more than 500 meters lower. Also raft and kayak trips are on the Dunajec possible. It is also possible to cycle from the village over the Dunajec Bridge to Slovakia and there on the south bank of the river to cycle through the breakthrough or to cross it on foot.
