Trasaghis (Trasàghis in standard Friulian, Trasagas in local Friulian) is a municipality of Friuli Venezia Giulia in the area Gemonese.

To know

In 1976 the town, like the whole Gemonese area, suffered massive destruction following the devastating earthquake that affected this part of the Friuli.

Geographical notes

The town is located on the right of the Tagliamento, a short distance from the river, at the foot of Mount Brancot (1,015 m). It is 7 km from Gemona del Friuli. 14 from Cavazzo Carnico, 20 from Tolmezzo.

Background

The 1976 earthquake mortally wounded the artistic heritage of the towns of the Municipality of Trasaghis. It lost the major churches (often of recent construction) with frescoes of local importance (by Domenico Fabris, 19th century, in San Michele Nuovo in Braulins, by Antonio Brolio, 1925, in Trasaghis) with altars (two of them are preserved, from the 18th century, in Trasaghis) and various furnishings, the small church of S. Michele dei Pagani in Braulins was practically saved, although severely damaged.

The hamlet of Avasinis was marked by the massacre of May 2, 1945 in which over fifty civilians were killed by retreating Nazi troops.

  • 1 Church of San Michele dei Pagani (rises above the built-up area of the hamlet of Braulins.). There is uncertainty regarding the time of the church's foundation, which in any case is thought to date back to the 13th century. Tradition has it that it was built over an ancient Lombard temple by the local population who had founded the small inhabited center located around the castle of Bragolino.
The church has no facade, as it is leaning against the rocky wall. Equipped with a small apse, it has an entrance through two doors on the side walls.
In the apse a fresco depicts the Holy Trinity; it is believed to be the work of an anonymous painter from the circle of Giulio Urbanis (late 16th century).
A wall fresco with features from the end of the 13th century portrays the archangel San Michele holding the balance of judgment.
After a long period of neglect and ruin, the building was restored by the population in the years 1925 - 1929, in memory of the fallen in the First World War.
It is one of the few buildings of artistic and architectural value in the area that survived the destruction caused by the 1976 earthquake. Church of San Michele dei Pagani on Wikipedia church of San Michele dei Pagani (Q17624954) on Wikidata
