Signposts / signs for the Twiste cycle path or Twisteweg

The Twiste cycle path is a 41 km long cycle route from Korbach on the Twist lake and Volkmarsen to Warburg. Between the Hanseatic city Korbach and Twist the cycle route is still being planned and will not be signposted until the Berndorfer bypass road has been completed. The local route description of this section is therefore initially only a suggestion of how the Twisteweg could run later and comes from OpenStreetMap (as of August 2015).

Korbach - Twistesee (23 km)

Along the Twistesees
Underpass of the Twiste cycle path under the federal highway 450

From 1 Korbach Central Station (KBS 612/KBS 622) can be reached via the bus stopbus stopZOB (several bus routes) to Arolser Landstrasse and follow it past the bus stopbus stopArolser Landstrasse (Lines 505 and 597.1) and bus stopbus stopOn Lülingskreuz (Line 505) to the outskirts of Korbach. At this point, a cycle path begins to the right of the road, which you follow for a short while before you bypass the junction of the Korbach bypass to the east on gravel farm roads (not signposted). The road branches off directly north of the junction 2 In the Sicktal from the federal road 252 (Arolser Landstraße), into which you have to turn. Unfortunately, a ditch hinders the transition from the cycle path over the federal highway 252 to this street. Alternatively, you can Korbach via the Elfringhäuser Weg (Continental AG), to then shortly before a now somewhat overgrown, but beautiful 3 Rest area to meet again on the route described here. From the rest area you continue on asphalt farm roads northwest of the Wiggenberg downhill into the Twist valley and past the Teich-Mühle and the Fritze-Mühle Berndorf. In the village you cycle below the 4 Romanesque church over to bus stopbus stopBahnhofstrasse (Line 505), cross the federal highway 252 and drive back out of Berndorf via the streets Strother Straße and Am Mühlenufer. After crossing the Wollasche stream, you cycle south for a short time, and then head east on a rough gravel forest path uphill into the forest. The highest point of the 5 Reached Betenberg, where you keep to the south, but then turn left again into the next forest path (east). Over this you drive out of the forest and downhill in a small side valley 6 Rocklinghausen, right on the bike path on the Hofgut is the bus stopbus stopRocklinghausen (Line 581.2). Continue on an asphalt farm road through the now wider valley downhill to Twiste, with the Upland-Weserbergland-Weg hiking route (X6) added in between. Past the bus stopbus stopIn the Hingel (Line 581.2) and the Country butcher's shop Kesting one reaches the 7 Town center of Twiste with the bus stopbus stopMultipurpose hall (Line 581.2). The breakpoint Twiste (KBS 612) and the bus stopbus stopcenter (Line 505) can be reached via the hip street.

The small weather chapel on the Watter between the Twistesee and Volkmarsen

From Twiste the cycle route is signposted, albeit initially only with very small signposts. You leave the district of Twist valley Via Piepenstraße, as well as past Wieselhof and follow an asphalt farm road to Landesstraße 3118. On this you cross the Twiste at the level of the Berggrund farm and turn at the 8 The confluence of Kreisstraße 12 and Landesstraße 3118 to the right into a gravel road that is usually easy to drive on. Past a memorial stone with a park bench and a notice for cyclists about the possibly poor condition of the path, which can still be seen from the old and intact signage of the Hessian long-distance cycle route R6 and the Orange bike route comes from (the R6 now leads over the Twist lake, the Orange bike route not), you cycle along the edge of the forest to Kappel-Mühle, behind which you come to Kreisstraße 8. While the old routing of the Hess. Long-distance cycle route R6 (Orange bike route) a little later 9 Gut Bilstein and branches off into the Langen Wald, the Twiste cycle path runs on an asphalt cycle path alongside the road to Braunsen. Just before the bus stopbus stopBraunsen (Line 516) the Twisteweg branches off to the left into the street 10 Kniebrecher off, leads past a hiking board on the local hiking routes and leaves Braunsen again on the Lefringhäuser Weg. Together with the walking routes Waldecker Weg (W), Hessenweg 4 and Bonifatiuspfad (X12), the Twiste cycle path runs on a gravel farm road along the edge of the forest and the Twiste to the NSG Vorsperre Twistingalsperre and under the 11 Federal highway 450 through it. Behind this you come across the partly paved and partly graveled footpath and bike path, which is seven kilometers around the Twist lake leads. On the continuously paved western section of this circular route, the Twisteweg now runs past the water ski center and the one that was redesigned in 2015 12 Lido where the Hessian long-distance cycle route R6 to Bad Arolsen (Railway station KBS 612) and to bus stopbus stopLido (Line 560 (with bike rack)) branches off until 13 Dam with Café in the lake on the overflow funnel of the flood relief tower and Motorhome port Twistesee. Alternatively, you could just as well walk along the east bank of the Twistesees past the Twistesee Stübchen (not far from the bus stopbus stopTwist lake (Line 516)), signposted along the Diemel-Eder-Weg hiking route (D).

Twistesee - Warburg (18 km)

Twistesee - Warburg
Looking back at the ascent from the L 3080 to Haus Am Hildebrandt

From the dam of the Twistesees you drive on the wide asphalt Bericher Seeweg, the access road to Motorhome port, downhill along the edge of the forest to Landesstraße 3080 and the bus stopbus stopBranch cold (Lines 505 and 505.1). If you continue to follow Kreisstraße 4 (Alte Mühle) you will reach the Külte-Wetterburg stop (KBS 612), Twiste cycle path and Hessian long-distance cycle route R6 but lead steeply up an asphalt farm road to 14 House "Am Hildebrandt". Shortly after this one crosses the district road 6, into which the Hess. Long-distance cycle route R6 to Neu-Berich and further to Waldeck branches off and rolls down into the Wattertal. In this one drives on wider asphalt farm roads, the access roads to the nearby Funke sand pit, over the Watter and reaches the 15 small Weather chapel, which is only a few meters away from the Twiste cycle path, somewhat hidden by chestnut trees. After a recommendable visit from this one drives on to the VW logistics halls. You have to bypass this on also asphalted farm roads via Lütersheimer Straße before you pass the 16 Biogas plant Volkmarsen cycles down to the Warburg-Sarnau railway line. Along this and after crossing the Wetterweg you finally reach the outskirts of Volkmarsen the 17 Volkmarsen train station (KBS 612) with the bus stopbus stoprailway station (Lines 130, 505, 505.1 and W3). In Volkmarsen itself, instead of taking the Twiste cycle path over Arolser Straße, a small alley-like paved piece on the former railway line and the Am Krambühl street (partly graveled) past a wooden cross with Jesus (see map).

South facade of the Wittmark Chapel from the 12th century

The Twiste cycle path, on the other hand, runs along the main streets Arolser Straße, Rechtsstraße and Warburger Straße past the bus stopbus stopProtestant church and bus stopbus stophospital (Line W3) out Volkmarsen out. On a cycle path that runs alongside the road along state road 3075, you cycle over the Erpe and past one 18 Statue and the bus stopbus stopAt Petersberg (Line W3), behind which the bike path branches off from the road and leads over asphalt farm roads through the Twist valley. After a while, a meadow path, marked as hiking route V2, branches off to the 19 Wittmark Chapel from the 12th century, which was extensively renovated from 2000 to 2003. North of the Wittmarkapelle, the Twiste cycle path changes for the first time to the former railway line of the Twist valley railway and leads along the road 3075/552 over the 20 Border between Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia. Barely noticeable, the asphalted railway cycle path turns into a road-accompanying cycle path behind the state border, since it has been marked with red instead of green signposts and as R51 (cycle network NRW), and runs along state road 552 to Welda until just before the bus stopbus stop Wittmarstrasse (Line W3). In the district of Warburg turn right into the street Zum Bahnhof and leave the town past the 21 Wayside shrine of Sorrows from 1890 again. Just a few meters away from the Twiste cycle path there is a memorial stone to 80,000 German prisoners of war who were penned there in 1945 in the street Am Hoppenberg near the old train station. Back on the old railway line of the Twist Valley Railway, you cycle not far along the Twiste under the 22 Twist valley bridge along the federal motorway 44 and a little later, past the Luhmühle, also reaches Wormeln. In the village, the state road 552 must be crossed, unfortunately so-called jostling grids were set up to secure (see photo). Shortly after the state road 552 you pass the former one 23 Stop at Wormeln and drive into a small wood. Soon you will meet again on Landesstraße 552, cross it near the Twistemühle (no jostling bars) and drive into the Hanseatic city Warburg into it. Past the bus stopbus stop Wormelner Strasse (Line W3) one reaches the 24 Altstadtbahnhof and past the List saddlery also the Diemel cycle pathwhere the Twiste cycle path ends.

Old town - train station
Station building of the former Warburg Altstadt station

Who to the train station Warburg (KBS 430) will can now choose between two options. Both initially continue on the former Twisting Valley Railway over the Diemel to Kasseler Straße bus stopbus stopRiding arena (Line 140), but then share in the old station path. While the signposted variant goes directly up to the train station (KBS 430), the second variant runs as the R51 on the former railway line of the Twist Valley Railway through the 33-meter-long Warburg Tunnel, crosses the Landfurt road and leads along the Profitweg and the multi-generation park to 25 Großenederer Weg on the outskirts of Warburgwhere the railway cycle path ends. From there you can take the Oberer Hilgenstock road north along the freight station to Desenbergstraße, where you come across the first variant again. Both lead past the bus stopbus stopBahnhofstrasse (Among other things, NVV lines 120 and 140) to the 26 Warburg (Westf) station (KBS 430) with the bus stopbus stoprailway station.
