The Well of Wonders
  • Novacella Abbey (in Novacella). The Augustinian abbey of Novacella (in German Augustiner-Chorherrenstift Neustift), in the municipality of Varna, is one of the most prestigious abbeys in northern Italy and the Alps, as well as a grandiose complex of religious and civil buildings. In May 1956, Pope Pius XI elevated the abbey church to the dignity of a minor basilica.
The convent was founded in 1142 by the bishop of the diocese of Bressanone Blessed Hartmann, with the help of the burgrave of Sabiona Reginbert and his wife Christina. The abbey belongs to the Austrian Lateran Congregation of the Regular Canons of San Agostino; it was rebuilt and extended several times until the end of the eighteenth century. Since its foundation it has been a refuge for pilgrims coming from Northern Europe and heading to Rome and the Holy Land, after the hard test of crossing the Alpine passes.
In 1445, the well-known late medieval poet Oswald von Wolkenstein was buried there.
Following the suppression of religious orders, wanted by the French Revolution and implemented by Napoleon, many abbeys were suppressed in Europe. The Abbey of Novacella was suppressed by the Bavarian government, then reigning in Tyrol, in 1807.
With the reunification of Tyrol toAustria the Abbey was restored and reinvested of its rights and assets with the edict of Emperor Francesco I in 1816. For almost a thousand years the Canons Regular of Sant'Agostino have been involved in the education of children. In fact, the Abbey is still home to a college with a middle school attended by students from Bressanone and from various parts of the province of Bolzano.
Today we visit the great Baroque church dedicated to the Madonna, rich in works of art, and the stupendous halls of the Prelature.
The fortified complex, which is accessed via a small covered bridge, consists of several buildings from different eras and different styles (Romanesque bell tower, choir and presbytery of the church and cloister in Gothic style, church and library in Baroque and Rococo style ) coexist harmoniously in a well-defined space. Still today Novacella shows the original layout of the XII century.
- the church of Santa Maria Assunta it was entirely rebuilt in the eighteenth century in Baroque style by Giuseppe Delai, maintaining the Gothic presbytery. It preserves numerous valuable paintings and frescoes, some by Matthäus Günther. It is a typical example of the Alpine and Aavarese Baroque.
At the center of the main courtyard of the abbey is the Renaissance well, called the "well of wonders" because it is dominated by an octagonal aedicule on whose sides the seven wonders of antiquity are depicted and on the eighth side, proudly, the abbey .
The important Library it occupies two floors of the monastery and holds about 65,000 printed volumes, mainly scientific and theological works, divided into 43 subjects, as well as manuscripts and illuminated manuscripts. It has the smallest manuscript in the world. The main hall, a masterpiece of South Tyrolean Rococo, was built by Antonio Giuseppe Sartori in 1773. With the suppression of the Abbey in 1807 many works were confiscated and were dispersed or transferred to Bavaria. Part of them were redeemed by the Italian government after the First World War and returned to the Abbey, another large part is kept at the University Library of Innsbruck.
Novacella Castello Angelo
Castle of the Angel (Engelsburg) is called the most notable building of the complex: a Romanesque rotunda reworked in the crown but substantially well preserved. Buildings of this type were frequent on pilgrimage routes, referring to both the great Roman buildings and the rotunda of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. In this case it is also probable an identification with the famous and almost homonymous important Roman monument.
The wines of Novacella produced and sold by the Abbey are excellent white wines, worthy of the best South Tyrolean winemaking tradition, which help to ensure the economic independence of the complex. Around the abbey there are fine vineyards, whose grapes in the cellars of the convent are transformed into the most famous DOC wines of the Valle Isarco; the abbey's wine production is famous in particular for the Sylvaner.
  • Parish Church of San Giorgio. It is located above the town and is dedicated to San Giorgio. It was first mentioned in 1325, but only in 1668 did it actually have a priest of its own. In 1938 it became a curacy and finally a parish in 1958.
The neo-Gothic bell tower is built in granite blocks, as a copy of the White Tower (Weißer Turm) of Bressanone.
Salern Castle
  • Salern Castle (Burg Salern). It dates back to the 12th century and was located upstream from the town; its remains are clearly visible from the town. The history of this castle begins with that of another: the Voitsberg Castle. It was the seat of the homonymous family and stood on a hill (788 m) above the inhabited center of Varna in a strategic position from which the confluence between the val Pusteria and thehigh Isarco Valley.
Following a dispute with the bishop Bruno of Bressanone in 1277 it was destroyed and today no trace of it remains.
However, just in front of the position of the Voitsberg Castle around the 13th century the Salern Castle was always built by the bishop. The fortress was the seat of the homonymous judicial district until the seventeenth century.
After the suppression of the district, the castle slowly fell into disrepair and today only a few remains remain, including parts of the surrounding walls and the small building and the northern wall of the keep.
The ruin is clearly visible from both Bressanone than from Varna. To reach it, you can drive from Varna by taking the road to Scaleres and following 3 hairpin bends.
On foot it is possible to reach the ruins through a special path: the Carl-Toldt-Weg
  • Riga di Sotto powder magazine. To the east of Lake Varna there was a powder magazine in the Forch production area which housed explosives and especially anti-tank mines. It was used until the 1990s, after which it was abandoned and later divided into two areas (north and south) by a civil fence, also passing over some shacks where the explosives were housed. This allowed two different users to exploit the area. Next to this area, the inert waste that emerged from the excavation of the Brenner base tunnel was deposited.

Natural areas

  • Kneipp facilities. Along the road that goes up to Scaleres there are outdoor health facilities, available to anyone. The implants exploit Sebastian Kneipp's theory of hydrotherapy, which argues that blood circulation can be facilitated by immersing the limbs in the icy waters of the Scaleres stream (Schalderer Bach).
  • Earth pyramids. North of Novacella opens up an unspoiled valley, the Riga valley (Riggertal). On its eastern side there are some formations of earth pyramids.
Varna lake
  • Varna lake. North of the city, towards the nearby center of Fortress, rises the lake of Varna (Vahrner See), a small biotope where it is also possible to swim. The lake water is rich in iodine.
In addition to this lake, further downstream there was a second small lake called lake below Varna. This however was drained and reclaimed in 1825 to obtain precious land for cultivation. In memory of the original lake, the fishermen's association of Valle Isarco between 1995 and 1998 he recreated an artificial lake for sport fishing in the same place as the original and called it Untersee.
Marsh biotope of Varna lake
Since 1977 an area of 6.23 hectares adjacent to the lake has been protected, because it is of importance for the stopping of birds during migrations. Around the lake it is possible to take a walk; in the northern part there is a very popular beach during the summer. The lake every year receives the authorization from the provincial office for bathing. A small campsite is located nearby.
The stretch of water can be reached, as well as by car, also through the new cycle path which in the area follows one of the medieval routes known as Camino de Santiago: the southwest variant of the Jakobsweg Tyrolean.
