Its beautiful welcoming cities have for centuries been the favorite destinations of Grand Tour, and still welcome visitors with romantic historic centers to visit and elegant walks along the lake. In the northern part, localities such as Verbania is Cannobio, while in the southern part, called Vergante, there are places such as Arona is Stresa in addition to the picturesque Borromean islandsIn addition to the most popular centers along the shore of the lake, the Verbano does not fail to offer many pleasant mountain resorts: Colazza, Invorio, Gignese, Premeno. The green heart of Verbano corresponds to Val Grande National Park. It is considered the area wilderness largest in Italy, since it has remained totally uncontaminated and nature has been able to follow its course since there is no inhabited center inside it.

When to go

The perfect season to enjoy the lake and its reliefs is spring when the temperatures are not too sultry.

Background

In the medieval period, the territory of the lake saw the birth of numerous churches along its banks. The Torriani and the Visconti fought over these lands. Finally, the star of the Borromeo came out and became the most important family in the area, while the Swiss ruled it to the north.

The Savoys have controlled the western shore since the eighteenth century, when the eastern one enters the Austrian dominions. With the Unification, the lake experienced a new dimension in the nineteenth century with the development of elite tourism and a consequent large increase in the number of villas, parks and hotels. The following century also opens up to mass tourism, when the lake takes advantage of the ease of communication following the construction of the Laghi motorway which allows Milan and to its immense conurbation to consider the Verbano a classic destination for trips out of town during the weekend.

Spoken languages

In the Piedmontese Verbano, due to the close relationship with the Lombard shore, a western Lombard dialect is spoken.
