How to get around

What see

  • 1 parish church. It is a late Baroque building erected between 1792 and 1796 (the bell tower is from 1803) and dedicated to the town's patron saint, Santo Stefano. The roof of the church and that of the bell tower are entirely composed of painted wooden tiles, although at first glance they would seem to be made up of common terracotta tiles. For this reason, about every five years they are subject to maintenance, which is performed in a very spectacular way, climbing the bell tower and church with roped rock climbers.
Inside, the main altar, the side altars and the pulpit are entirely in wood painted in marble-like veins. The frescoes by Franz Altmutter and the altarpiece by Martin Knoller, a pupil of Paul Troger, depicting the martyrdom of Saint Stephen are appreciated. Outside the parish church, along the left side of the access stairway, there is a pre-existing double fifteenth-century chapel. In the lower part, now used as a mortuary chapel, you can admire a fresco by Simone da Tesido, while in the upper one, dedicated to Sant'Anna, there is a starry sky with circular vaults.
On the floor in the center of the nave through a stained glass window you can see the foundations of a previous medieval church. These side chapels are among the oldest in the entire valley and represent one of the greatest examples of Gothic architecture in Val Pusteria.
  • 2 Church of Santa Maddalena of Moos. Far from the other churches and from the town center, the church of Santa Maddalena is located near Mount Moos. Located near the handicraft area, along the internal road leading to Monguelfo, the church was built in 1490 on commission of the Countess Paola di Gonzaga, consort of the Marquis Leonardo di Gorizia. The church is not in the best conditions, although the roof and the similar roof of the bell tower - both in wood - have recently been restored. Inside are the paleobaroque altar from the 1600s and the late Gothic relief table depicting the Magi, the work of Michael Parth. During the summer months it is home to concerts of classical and sacred music.
  • 3 Hospital church (Holy Trinity). Along the route of the main road that crosses the town, "Frau-Emma-Straße" (the former part of the city of the Strada Statale SS 49 della Pusteria), almost in front of the Piazza von Kurz, where the town hall is located, you can see the Chapel of the Holy Trinity, built inside the hospital (now disused) where the plague victims were hospitalized in the Middle Ages and in the following centuries.
It is in Baroque style and retains the original furnishings. The entire complex (the church forms a single body with the old hospital being connected to it by an atrium with a cross vault) was built between 1456 and 1473 and expanded in the following centuries. The current appearance is the one definitively resulting from the last reworking of 1655, when the church was consecrated by the auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Bressanone.
  • Pian di Maia. To the south of the village, hidden behind the first rows of trees in the forest, is the Alpine House of the Scalabrinians of Pian di Maia (Maistatt), near a source of thermal water (analyzed by Prof. Giovanni Perini as early as 1959), next to which there is a small chapel, very well guarded and furnished, the chapel of St. John of Nepomuk.
  • Tourist Museum of Alta Pusteria (Wassermann Palace). The Alta Pusteria Tourist Museum is housed in the ancient Wassermann Palace (former property of the counts von Kurz), in which various ancient rooms have been reconstructed with original furniture and furnishings.
  • Former powder keg. To the south-west of Villabassa in the direction of Braies, there is a former military powder magazine of the Italian army. Until the 1990s he carried out his work by keeping various materials, including explosives. In the night between 6 and 7 May 1976 around 21.00 there was the infamous Friuli earthquake; soldiers left the Cesare Battisti barracks in Monguelfo to help the local population by taking possession of explosives and detonators kept in this powder keg.
After 2000 this, together with the powder keg of San Giorgio and that of Cimabanche, was used for the training of both civil and military personnel, escorting convoys, escorting VIPs and patrolling. Here, in particular, people are trained to move with different vehicles on all types of terrain. The training area is now entrusted to the 6th Alpine Regiment, which since summer 2013 has inaugurated an off road circuit, with the aim of increasing the safety of drivers when driving vehicles. This circuit was created in collaboration with the 4x4 Academy off-road division.

Natural areas

  • Park along the Rienza stream. In Villabassa there is a wellness park along the river Rienza, with a special facility that exploits Sebastian Kneipp's theory of hydrotherapy. Access to the park is subject to charges.
Also here has recently (autumn 2010) opened an outdoor inhalation facility, the first in Italy, together with a pavilion, both financed by the IV Italy / Austria "Kneipp Alp" Nr. 2301 project. [13]
