The European walking route E1 is one of eleven long-distance trails coordinated by the European Hiking Association and maintained by national or regional hiking organizations. The E1 runs from the North of Scandinavia deep into Italy and, if marked, is approximately 5,000 km long. Parts of the route, especially in Lapland and the South of Italy, are not yet fixed or are not yet marked. However, the route is under development; it is intended that the E1 of the North Cape to the south of Sicily going to walk. The marked portion of the E1 begins in mid-rangeSweden and traverses that land to the south, passing by Gothenburg over to Denmark and reached at Flensburg the German border. In Germany the E1 runs in two variants (one of which runs parallel to the E6 and E9) to Hamburg. At the height of Hamelin crosses the E1 de E11, around Frankfurt (Main) the E3 and with Heidelberg the two variants of the E8. The E9, E11 and E8, which also run through the Netherlands, therefore offer a connection to the E1 (the E1 itself does not pass through the Netherlands). In Constance and Kreuzlingen crosses the E1 the Swiss border and the E4 about. On the San Gottardo the highest point in the Alps is reached, after which the E1 passes through ticino descends to Lugano and the Italian Po plain. Not far away from Genoa the E1 starts a long stretch through the Apennines, that, as far as is known, until Naples is marked.
The E1 offers a good cross-section of the varied European landscape: the treeless tundra in Norwegian and SwedishLapland; the ridge of the Scandinavian peninsula, the rolling hills of southern Sweden, Jutland and northern Germany; the low mountains of central Germany; the Black Forest; the Alps; the Po plain with its city centers from Roman times; the high ridge of the Italian peninsula where the E1 climbs to its greatest height; and the subtropical island Sicily.

The E1 itself is a very safe walking route. The greatest danger lies in an almost invisible small animal: the tick. Ticks can (to varying degrees; in some regions almost 100% of ticks are infected) be carriers of life-threatening parasites. Lyme disease, which is spread by tick bites, occurs throughout the E1 region. You cannot vaccinate against this disease, but you should check yourself every evening for the presence of ticks. Once infected, a course of antibiotics is necessary.
In northern Sweden, a danger lies in the low population density. People often walk through deserted areas for days and you will have to go out with a number of meals (water is present in the form of streams and rivers, often also snow). You will also have to carefully prepare your overnight stays, especially if you are not carrying a tent and sleeping bag. Something similar also applies to parts of the E1 in the Italian Apennines. The crossing of the Alps about the San Gottardo in Switzerland on the other hand, is safe and relatively simple.
Other dangers along the route are minor: brown bears, wild boars and other large game are generally shy. Rabies (rabies) occurs among forest animals, but is rare.
There are no indications of high crime along the E1.
