Wiehengebirge - Wiehengebirge

Location of the Wiehengebirge
The Wiehengebirge ends in the east at the Porta Westfalica. The Weser Mountains begin on the right bank of the Weser.
The Wittekindsweg is a classic among German hiking trails.

The Wiehengebirge is a 95 km long, up to 10 km wide ridge that stretches from Osnabrück Country to Ostwestfalen-Lippe extends. As a mere ridge mountain range, the Wiehengebirge is not a real low mountain range like that Calenberger Bergland or even the resin; however, for residents of north-western Lower Saxony, who usually see nothing but flat land, it is the closest approximation to what could be called "mountains".

The region offers a number of small towns worth seeing and of course endless hiking opportunities. Despite its relatively northerly location, the Wiehengebirge has some astonishingly high peaks, including the one near Hüllhorst Heinbrink (almost 320 meters), and south of Lübbecke den Wurzelbrink (318 meters) and the Kniebrink (315 meters). Hardcore hikers run the 95 km long Wittekindsweg from, which opens up the entire mountain ridge, from Bramsche to Porta Westfalica; Amateurs are content with the smaller paths that cover the Wiehengebirge as a dense network.

A special feature of the region are the many castles, which are all privately owned, so that outside of the special manor events, visitors can only enjoy the gardens and the beautiful exterior of these traditional buildings.

background

On a hilltop south of Lübbecke stood from the 13th to the 18th century Reineberg Castle.

Although the settlement of the Wiehengebirge already began in Roman times, it did not gain any appreciable extent until the end of antiquity when the tribal duchy of Saxony was established. The oldest towns in the region were also founded at this time: Lübbecke, Minden and Wallenhorst. A hero who is popularly celebrated in the region is the Saxon Duke Widukind, who bravely defended his country against the Franks led by Charlemagne in the Saxon Wars (772–804), but ultimately had to bow to their superior military strength.

When the Duchy of Saxony went under in the High Middle Ages, the western part of the Wiehengebirge fell to the Principality of Osnabrück, the eastern part to the Principality of Minden and the County of Ravensberg. In the late Middle Ages, when agriculture was booming, even ridges were cleared in the Wiehen Mountains in order to gain arable land. Today they are forested again. The Wiehengebirge has always been an important point of forestry since the beginning of settlement. Iron ore has also been mined here since the 11th century. The mountain spring water, which has been used since 1728, is of great importance as a healing spring in the climatic health resort of Bad Holzhausen, but is also used by the brewery based in Lübbecke Barre brew used.

language

In the Wiehengebirge and around it, East Westphalian is traditionally spoken, a form of Low German. Here are a few typical words: “hömma!” (Listen up), “tricky” (drunk), “mickrich” (small), “schnücksch” (picky, bitchy, conceited), “twiers” (cross-headed), “pissed off “(Kidding).
