Zuglio (Zui in Friulian) is a center of the Friuli Venezia Giulia.

Geographical notes
It rises in theFriulian Alpine Arch in Valle del But or Canale di San Pietro (Cjanal di San Pieri), to the orographic right of the stream, in the alpine region of Carnia. It is 1.5 km from Arta Terme, 8 from Tolmezzo, 14 from Paularo, 35 from Gemona del Friuli, 53 from Pontebba, 57 from Udine.
Background
Zuglio is the ancient one Iulium Carnicum, the northernmost Roman city in Italy, founded between 58 and 49 BC. as vicus it became a colony in the 1st century AD. It assumed an ever greater importance due to its strategic position, near the so-called Via Iulia Augusta, which led to the Norico regions through the impervious Monte Croce Carnico pass.
In the late antique and early medieval period it was an episcopal seat (4th-8th century). The diocese, suffragan of Aquileia, extended its jurisdiction to the Carnia and al CadoreThe municipal body, suppressed in 1932 to be aggregated to the municipality of Arta, was then reconstituted as an autonomous municipality in 1946.

What see
- 1 Civic Archaeological Museum "Iulium Carnicum". Inaugurated in 1995, it is located in the center of the capital, near the archaeological area of the Forum and collects the findings of the excavations of the Roman city, which began as early as the nineteenth century and previously preserved in a small Antiquarium, as well as objects from the entire Carnia. The exhibition area is spread over the 3 floors of Palazzo Tommasi Leschiutta with 7 exhibition rooms.

- 2 Saint Peter. The parish was built on the pre-existing and ancient cathedral of the diocese of Zuglio, suppressed during the eighth century.
- The church is the oldest of the 10 historic parish churches of Carnia and is considered the mother church. It is the main religious building of the Val Bût. It is mentioned for the first time in 808, when it replaced the previous basilica of Zuglio which was destroyed by the Avars.
- The current building dates back to 1312 built on pre-existing settlements and with various subsequent modifications; it was a bishopric in the Middle Ages as part of the then suppressed diocese of Zuglio.
- The church is preceded by an atrium in which you can see a Romanesque mullioned window. The sides are supported by buttresses, added at the beginning of the 16th century, when the original trussed roof was replaced by ribbed vaults.
