Istanbul Airport - Aeroporto di Istanbul

L'Istanbul airport, also known as Istanbul New Airport, (IATA: IST) is the main of the two passenger airports serving the city of Istanbul (the other is Sabiha Gökçen on the Asian side). About 35 km north of Istanbul, in the European part of the city, it became fully operational on April 7, 2019.

To know

A well connected airport

Istanbul has been a center for trade and travel for centuries, a reference between East and West, its airport has come to play the same role in the modern era. Turkish Airlines likes to claim (and Lufthansa wants to rival this claim) that it is there airline with multiple destinations in most countries; undoubtedly many countries can be reached from Istanbul airport. The only other airport that can challenge the rivalry between Frankfurt and Istanbul in terms of the number of countries served is the airport of Amsterdam Schiphol with the KLM company which has excellent connections globally also due to a Dutch tradition of exchanges and travel that dates back to past centuries.

Overcrowding at Istanbul's Atatürk Airport, one of the busiest in Europe, was compounded by the fact that there was no room for possible expansion due to urban growth around the airport. Therefore, construction of a new airport has begun since around 2010 as one of several Turkish megaprojects.

There were many delays in opening and flights were transferred to this airport in stages. In November 2018, a limited number of Turkish Airlines flights to Ankara, Antalya, Smyrna, Baku in Azerbaijan ed Ercan to North Cyprus they started operating from Istanbul airport. At the beginning of 2019, some Turkish Airlines short-haul services were added to several European cities and the Kuwait. Finally, on April 7, 2019, all flights were transferred.

There are two websites for the airport: one on the construction of the airport e the other for travelers and passenger information.

Flights

Almost every major city in Europe (including the Russia European) has a direct flight to and from IST and there are extensive connections throughout the Middle East, with destinations in Far East, Africa is North America. Many of these flights are operated by the domestic carrier Turkish Airlines, either directly or through agreements.

There's a terminal with 5 accesses (A, B, D, F and G). Due to the long distances between sections and possible security checks, the minimum connection time (MCT) is 60 minutes. Each access extends from the central area where the check-in desks, security controls and baggage claim are located. Gates C and E connect directly to the main terminal and are therefore not considered independent entrances.

Domestic flights

All major cities in Turkey, and some medium-sized cities, have at least one daily flight to IST, and those from Ankara they fly every hour. Corridor G (south-east) is reserved for domestic flights only, although there are 3 passenger boarding bridges on Corridor F (which is directly north of Corridor G) have also been assigned to domestic flights.

For domestic flights use entrance doors n. 1 and 2 at departures level. National check-in procedures can be completed at the check-in desks in corridor D, or alternatively at the automatic check-in kiosks in corridor E.

After completing the procedures, all passengers must go through security in front of Aisle D. Preferred lanes and direct access to the Turkish Airlines Domestic Lounge are available for those with the appropriate ticket or status.

International flights

Turkish Airlines International Economy Class passengers can access the check-in areas using entrance gates No. 3 and 4 on the departures level. Check-in procedures can be completed at corridors F, G, H and J.

International business class and Star Alliance Gold card passengers must use front door # 1. 5

Special check-in counters are available in the following corridors:

  • Corridor E for self check-in
  • Corridor G for passengers with disabilities and for those traveling in large groups
  • Corridor H for family check-in desks and for unaccompanied minors
  • Corridor K for flights subject to special security (US, UK and Canada)
  • Aisle L for Turkish Airlines business class passengers and Star Alliance Gold card passengers
  • Corridors A to C and M to S for all other carriers (non-Turkish Airlines flights)

At the end of the check-in, to reach the gates all passengers must go through the security checks opposite the corridors G, H, J and K.

How to get

As of 2020, the only quick way to access the airport is by car or bus. Travel time from central Istanbul is approximately 60 minutes.

By metro

The airport will be connected by several lines of the Istanbul metro. One of them departs from Gayrettepe station on the new M11 line and is expected to open in August 2021. Another connection from Halkalı on the Marmara railway line is also planned.

By bus

All buses depart from level -2, which is one floor below the arrivals level. 19 bus lines from three operators leave the airport almost 24 hours a day. The fare is paid via IstanbulKart (Istanbul's public transport smart card). These are available both for purchase (6 TL) and for recharging (in case you already own one) at the airport from the automatic machines (cash only) or from the Havaist ticket offices (cash and credit cards accepted). If you do not intend to use the expensive Havaist buses, a payment of 15 TL (as only banknotes are accepted) is sufficient for deposit and recharging to get to the city by iETT bus (7 TL). Attention, some locals might recommend a 20 TL top-up, as they generally expect tourists to take the more expensive Havaist services.

The operators are:

  • Istanbul Seyahat - It offers scheduled intercity bus services on two routes. (August 2020)
    • Istanbul Airport - Çorlu - Tekirdağ. Ecb copyright.svgOne-way fare with reserved seat: 60 TL which can be purchased online in advance. Simple icon time.svg9 departures a day (08: 00-01: 30) with a frequency of 120 minutes.
    • Istanbul Airport - Lüleburgaz - Babaeski - Edirne. Ecb copyright.svgOne way fare with reserved seat: 75-90 TL which can be purchased online in advance. Simple icon time.svg6 departures a day (08: 30-22: 30) with a frequency of 120 minutes.
  • Havaist - Consisting of a fleet of over 100 forty-six-seater luxury coaches with plenty of luggage space, backrest screens, onboard WiFi and USB power sockets in the seat. In August 2020 9 operate broken that cover 43 stops with frequencies ranging from 30 to 90 minutes. As an alternative to using an Istanbulkart, fares can be pre-purchased online through theirs website or the Havaist app, although the interface is still mainly in Turkish. You need to create an account and preload your credit. The balance is then represented by a QR code within the associated Havaist app. When scanned by an on-board reader, the appropriate fee is deducted. The most useful route for tourists is HVIST-14 which serves Taksim. The former IST-20 service for Sultanahmet has not yet been restored after closing due to COVID-19.

By taxi

There are three types of taxis at Istanbul Airport, yellow taxis (cheap), turquoise taxis (comfort) and black taxis (premium). Whatever you decide to use, always insist on using the taximeter as there are no fixed prices for the city. Many taxis now accept credit cards for payment, however there is a small charge which is indicated by an official sticker in the window.

Istanbul Taxis Trade Association (İTEO) has published some guide rates (April 2019). These do not include motorway or bridge tolls.

How to get around

Since only one terminal has been built so far, without a rail or bus transfer system, you will probably have to walk quite a lot. It can take some time to walk between the gates, especially if they are at opposite ends of the huge terminal with its long corridors, so please allow enough time for connections. Estimated times to walk from the central terminal area to the furthest gates at the end of each corridor (gate A11, B15, D17, F16 and G11) are approximately 15-20 minutes.

There is also a transport service in each corridor from the central terminal area for the price of 5 EUR

For transit passengers who need to reconfirm security checks and whose connection time is less than 60 minutes, there are areas of Short Connection in each corridor which avoid the need to traverse the length of the atrium to the central transfer room. The positions are as follows:

Wait

Turkish Airlines offers free guided tours of Istanbul's attractions to its passengers as part of a program called Touristanbul. This program includes transportation to and from the airport and a traditional Turkish meal.

The conditions are to make a stopover of at least six hours and a maximum of 24 hours, between 09:00 and 18:00 and, in addition, the flights arriving and departing must be international and operated by Turkish Airlines. Advance booking is not required for these tours, simply go to customs and immigration and then to the "hotel desk" in the arrivals hall. The airline has more detailed information on them home page.

Around

The airport is far from anywhere (a major criticism of the Atatürk airport closure) there is no particular place worth looking for nearby.

Provided you have your papers in order and can arrange transportation, relatively close locations in the lush countryside north of Istanbul include Kemerburgaz and the Belgrade forest, with many Ottoman-era aqueducts that blend seamlessly with their jungle-like surroundings east of the airport, and the tranquil Terkos lake, large beaches undeveloped on the Black Sea and mysterious Byzantine ruins scattered in the forests to the west.
