Geographical notes

Located inUpper Molise, is 18 km from Trivento, Pescolanciano is Pietrabbondante, 25 from Agnone, 32 from Isernia and 35 from Campobasso.

Background

The origins of the town are unknown and can be traced back to various legends, according to which Bagnoli was founded in one by a Duke who drinks in the waters of the Trigno, in another with the construction of urban agglomerations around a thermal spring ( Balneoli, hence the name) and finally by some tribes to find shelter from the barbarian invasions. The first historical information dates back to the Middle Ages, when the fief was part of the Contado del Molise. Subsequently, after a series of changes of ownership also between French and Spanish lords, it becomes part of the Kingdom of Naples and then of the Kingdom of Italy.

With the twentieth century the country has seen a strong depopulation due to emigration, especially in Rome where many people from Bagnoli work as taxi drivers. From a study carried out by the association "Forche Caudine" in 2013, it appears that more people from Bagnoli live in Rome (about a thousand) than in the country.

What see

Church of San Silvestro
  • 1 Church of San Silvestro. It is located in the ancient part of Bagnoli, on the rocky buttress that dominates the so-called "Terra di basso". It was built in the 13th-14th century and has been repeatedly damaged by earthquakes and restored.
Its characteristic is that it is literally wedged between two rock spurs, which leave only the side walls visible. In fact, the entrance portal opens onto the right side wall, facing the inhabited center.
The bell tower, characterized by its "onion" roof made of colored majolica, is built on the spur that rises next to the apse.
The portal has three round columns on each of the two sides: on each side the innermost is smooth, the central one is decorated with a twisted motif and the external one has a herringbone decoration. The three small columns end at the top on a capital decorated with a human face among floral motifs.
Above the portal, raised by an architrave, a semicircular lunette takes up the decorations of the columns on the inside and presents on the outside a frame decorated with a stylized plant that comes from the mouth of a human head on the left and ends in an amphora on the right .
The interior has three naves. On the back wall there is the choir with the pipe organ; on the wall of the right aisle there is a wooden crucifix which has the particularity of having articulated arms, so that they can be lowered along the sides of the statue when it was used without the cross in the Good Friday procession. Also on the wall of the right aisle, next to the secondary entrance to the church, a plaque commemorates the consecration of the church and the main altar by the bishop of Trivento.
