Biggesee - Biggesee

The Biggesee in the evening: jetty with sailing boats in the foreground, the dam in the background

The Biggesee (sometimes too: Biggestausee) is a dam in the Sauerland and the fifth largest dam in Germany.

places

background

Biggesee: The low water level is clearly visible.

The plans for the dam went back to the early 1930s. Through and after the war, development stalled until the Bigge Reservoir Act initiated construction in the 1950s. In 1965 the dam was "inaugurated" after up to 2500 people and railway lines had been relocated. If the Bigge is very low, old bridges can sometimes still be seen that protrude from the water. The Neu-Listernohl district of Attendorn is an example of a resettlement from the time it was built. The original (old) Listernohl is under water.

landscape

As in the usual Sauerland, the landscape beyond the shore is covered with forests. Fields are occasionally visible from the lake. The bank is often quite steep.

The lake in its entirety belongs to the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge nature park.

The excursion steamers operate with several stops between Attendorn and Olpe-Sondern. With the exception of the excursion steamers, the rescue services (fire brigade and DLRG) and the Ruhr Association, motorized traffic is prohibited to all road users on the lake. Sailors need a vignette from the Ruhr Association.

The entire lake can be circled on paved bike paths, which often run parallel to the road.
