Braniewo is the oldest city in Warmia and was originally the seat of the bishops of Warmia. However, after the pagan Pruzzen dared several revolts against the Catholic Church in the 13th century and destroyed the bishop's seat several times, it was replaced in 1278 Frombork relocated. Warmia, and with it Braniewo, remained Catholic even after the Reformation, since, in contrast to the noble Prussia, which had been a Polish fief since 1466, it belonged to the royal Prussia, which was directly subordinate to the Polish crown.
In the course of the First Partition of Poland in 1772, the place came to the Kingdom of Prussia and then in 1871 to the German Empire.
About 85% of the site was destroyed in the Second World War and then partially rebuilt true to the original. 31,371 fallen soldiers of the Red Army are buried near Braniewo in one of the largest military cemeteries in Poland and the largest military cemetery of the Red Army.
