On April 23, 1516, the Georgi Day, Duke Wilhelm IV. In Ingolstadt proclaimed the decree known today as the Bavarian Purity Law on the Landstandetag. According to this, Bavarian beer may only consist of hops, malt, yeast and water, and many brewers still adhere to this requirement to this day.
