The Buntsandstein-Odenwald or Rear Odenwald lies between the Front Odenwald, the Neckar Valley and the Building land.

Regions
Typical for the region of the Rear Odenwald is the red sandstone that not only paints the rocks in the landscape red, but also provides the color for the facades of numerous houses. It is limited in the south by that Odenwald Neckar Valley, to the west of the Mountain road roughly along a line from Heidelberg to Weinheim. The limit to the Front Odenwald runs roughly over Weinheim and Lindenfels to Miltenberg. In the east that forms Building land the limit which is roughly from Mosbach above Book runs to the Main.
Politically, the Buntsandstein-Odenwald is divided between two federal states. In the south-eastern part is the Badische Odenwald, he belongs to the Baden-Wuerttemberg Neckar-Odenwald district and to the Rhein-Neckar-Kreis, the northwestern part is in the Hessian Odenwaldkreis with the district town Erbach.
