St. Luigi Gonzaga

The eldest son of Ferrante Gonzaga, first marquis of Castiglione delle Stiviere and of Marta Tana di Chieri, he was born in the family castle of Castiglione March 9, 1568. He renounced the title of future Marquis of Castiglione, in favor of his brother Rodolfo to enter the novitiate of the Society of Jesus in Rome, where he studied theology and philosophy. He died at the age of only 23 in Rome of illness. His body is buried in the church of Sant'Ignazio in Rome. He was beatified by Pope Paul V on 19 October 1605. On 31 December 1726 he was canonized by Pope Benedict XIII. The pope himself declared him "protector of students" in 1729. In 1926 he was proclaimed patron of Catholic youth by Pope Pius XI. In 1991 John Paul II named him patron of AIDS patients.

Sant'Angela Merici

He was born in Desenzano March 21, 1474. She was the founder of the Compagnia delle dimesse di sant'Orsola. She was proclaimed a saint by Pope Pius VII on May 24, 1807; in 1861 Pope Pius IX extended the cult to the whole Catholic Church. Sant'Angela has been the secondary patroness of the Diocese of Brescia since January 24, 2010.

Blessed Paola Montaldi

He was born in the family castle near Volta Mantovana in 1443 and at the age of fifteen he took the monastic habit and entered the convent of the Poor Clares of Santa Lucia in Mantua. She spent her life in prayer and contemplation and was elected abbess of the convent three times. The fame of holiness spread even outside the city and many were the people who turned to her for help and comfort in sickness. He met the blessed Osanna Andreasi of Mantua and had correspondence with the marquise Isabella d'Este. His body has been resting since 1872 in the parish church of Volta Mantovana.
