Neuschwanstein Castle is a German castle, located on a rocky outcrop 200 meters high, near Füssen in the Allgäu. Louis II of Bavaria had it built in the 19th century. Today it is the most famous castle in Germany, visited by millions of tourists every year. In 1867, during a trip to France, Louis II visited the castle of Pierrefonds. The idea of mixing this neo-gothic architectural style with the medieval one of Wartburg in Thuringia gave a flamboyant result. Neuschwanstein was built on the site of two old castles. To raise the castle of his dreams, Louis II dynamized the mountain to lower the base of the ancient castles by 8 meters. It was only after the construction of the road and the installation of running water that the first stone was laid, on September 5, 1869. In 1884, Louis II settled in the palace. Two years later, following his mysterious death, the castle was opened to the public, although it wasn't finished yet. The initial project was more ambitious, but the Bavarian state decided not to continue the work after the king's death.
