Ellmau is a tourist municipality in Sölllandl at the feet of the Wild Emperor in the State of Tyrol.
background
Ellmau is mentioned in 1155 in a deed of the monastery Herrenchiemsee Mentioned in a document for the first time as the “Elmouwe” estate.
From the 16th century onwards, Ellmau was of national importance as a post office on the route Vienna - Salzburg - innsbruck, otherwise the place was predominantly agricultural.
Tourism in Ellmau developed from the turn of the century onwards from through traffic and the beginning of alpinism around the Alpine Club huts Gaudeamushütte and Gruttenhütte in the Wilder Kaiser. Today the place is a tourist center for alpine winter sports and in summer the starting point for tours in the surrounding mountains.

By plane
- The nearest international airport is the in innsbruck (approx. 87 km), in Salzburg (approx. 73 km) and the airport Munich - Franz Josef Strauss (approx. 150 km);
By train
- The next train stations are Worgl and Kufstein in the Lower Inn Valley and in Leukental the stations in St. Johann in Tirol and in Kitzbühel. Continue by bus: direct connections.
In the street
- Of north / south: via the Inntal motorway A12, Rosenheim - innsbruck,
Kufstein South or Worgl (subject to a toll!) and further over Scheffau to Ellmau.
Danger: The 5 km long, previously toll-free section of the Inntal motorway from the German border near Kiefersfelden to the "Kufstein-Süd" motorway exit will also have a toll from December 1, 2013! (10-day vignette).
