Furtwangen in the Black Forest is a town in the upper Bregtal Middle Black Forest.

In the area around Furtwangen, the manual production of Black Forest clocks was a bitterly necessary sideline for mountain farmers in the 18th century. To improve the situation, the first watchmaking school was founded in 1850. A few years later, the German Clock Museum was established here, and the school soon developed further in the direction of precision engineering and electromechanics. Furtwangen was promoted to town in 1873, and world-famous watchmaking companies were founded in the town. Even today there are well-known companies in the metal and electronics industry far beyond the city limits.
