Winter sports in the Black Forest - Wintersport im Schwarzwald

The Black Forest is a classic German winter sports area. It was here in 1891 that the Todtnau ski club founded, it is the oldest German ski club. The slopes and trails are at altitudes of around 1000 m above sea level. NN. and are therefore relatively snow reliable.

getting there

By car

In the west, the Black Forest borders on the Upper Rhine Plain, through which the motorway A5 of Karlsruhe above Offenburg and Freiburg to Basel runs. In the east lies the A81that of Stuttgart above Villingen-Schwenningen leads to Lake Constance, and the larger side valleys of the Black Forest are crossed by well-developed federal roads, according to the B31that from Freiburg over Titisee-Neustadt to Donaueschingen leads through the center of the Black Forest winter sports area. Sometimes the winter sports areas are right next to the road: in the northern Black Forest it is B500, also known as the Black Forest High Road, which runs along a large number of slopes. Important: In the winter season there is a lot of traffic on these roads Snow chains compulsory.

By train

Some railway lines run through the Black Forest valleys, for example along the Murg, the Alb, the Nagold, the Kinzig or the Dreisam. The disadvantage is that the winter sports facilities are usually at a height that rail vehicles cannot reach. It is possible to travel to practically every winter sports resort, but on the spot you have to rely on local public transport, which is usually well adapted to tourism.

climate

The precipitation in the Black Forest mostly comes from the west, which is why the western side facing the Rhine plain is also heavier than the eastern side. Most of the precipitation falls in the northern Black Forest in the area of the Hornisgrinde, further south the influence of the Vosges increases in France noticeable, which catch a large part of the incline rain. However, enough snow remains for the ski areas of the central and high Black Forest, so that there are usually very good winter sports conditions from mid-December to early April. There is a special feature here: there are relatively often inversion weather conditions, with a bright winter sun shining in the high altitudes and often allowing distant views as far as the Alps, while the valleys sink into fog.
