The High Peissenberg is a single mountain in the center of the Pfaffenwinkel in Upper Bavaria. The name of the mountain is derived from "Bisenberc" after a probably still Germanic settler named Biso or Beiso.

Pilgrimage

The landlords on the mountain are the abbots of the nearby Rottenbuch monastery, they built a first chapel on the mountain top in 1514, which later became the focus of an important pilgrimage. The aim of the pilgrimage is a carved Virgin Mary figure from the Schongau Castle Chapel was brought to the mountain.

The chapel is followed by a hospice.

Meteorological observatory

The Hohenpeißenberg Meteorological Observatory is the oldest mountain weather station in the world with a series of observations that have been documented practically without interruption since 1781. The first observation day is January 1, 1781, the meteorological observations are then part of a network of stations of the "Societas Meteorologica Palatina", an institution sponsored by Elector Karl Theodor von der Pfalz in 39 stations for weather observation worldwide.

The "Mannheimer Hours", which was introduced at the station for the first time at the time, is 7:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. mean local time, are still the usual climate observation dates today.

The first observations were made by the monks from the nearby monastery Rottenbuch carried out. After secularization in 1803, the station is looked after by the Bavarian Academy of Sciences in Munich, and from 1838 it belongs to the observatory Bogenhausen near Munich, the observations on site are carried out by the respective pastors of Hohenpeißenberg as observers.

In 1879 the station is subordinated to the newly founded Bavarian State Weather Service, and since 1952 the observatory has belonged to the German Weather Service, which was newly founded after the Second World War.

Pilgrimage church
  • The Pilgrimage church is in two parts:
The older and smaller part is the first chapel from 1514, it is located on the west side of the church tower and is now known as the Chapel of Grace. In the years 1616 to 1619 the new Church of the Assumption was built on the east side of the tower as an extension and from Weilheimer Artists equipped.
In 1717 the altars were renewed and in 1747 the interior of the sanctuary was replaced by the Wessobrunner Franz Xaver Schmuzer stuccoed, the frescoes are by Matthäus Günther. The Gnadenkapelle is an excellent example of Rococo art. The concise shape of the double church is one of the landmarks of the Pfaffenwinkel.
  • Treasury (Sacred art, gold and silversmiths. Exhibits from pilgrimage and parish history), Matthäus-Günther-Platz 6, 82383 Hohenpeißenberg (In the former oratory). The pilgrimage church "Mariä Himmelfahrt" on the Hohen Peißenberg shines again in bright splendor.
