Geographical notes
Geographically it is part of the Mekong valley bordering the Laos. The Phu Phan Mountains act as a barrier between northern Isan and theCentral Isan.

Urban centers
- Bueng Kan (บึงกาฬ) - Agricultural city that also sustains itself thanks to tourism.
- Loei (เลย) - Along Route 201 towards the Laos
- Mukdahan (มุกดาหาร) - On the west bank of the Mekong River. The second bridge of the Thai-Laotian friendship is located here.
- Nakhon Phanom (นครพนม) - On the border with Laos.
- Nong Bua Lamphu (หนองบัวลำภู) - About 45 kilometers southwest of the city of Udon Thani.
- Nong Khai (หนองคาย) - Access point for Vientiane in Laos.
- Sakon Nakhon (สกลนคร) - On the southwestern shore of Nong Han Lake.
- Udon Thani (อุดรธานี) - It houses the archaeological site of Ban Chiang protected byUNESCO.
