Lisignago is a center of the Trentino Alto Adige.

To know

From 1 January 2016 it merged with Cembra to form the new municipality of Cembra Lisignago.

Geographical notes

Lisignago is located on the road of Dolomites between Cembra and Ceola, in the lower Avisio valley, on the right bank of the stream of the same name. It stands on a morainic terrace, at the foot of Mount Vason and is about 19 km from Trento.

Towards the Valle dell'Ischiele, the Dosso di S. Leonardo and the Val Bona slope down the coasts of interglacial floods intensely cultivated with vines with infinite terraces supported by dry stone walls; to the north extend the woods and meadows. On both sides of its territory two deep torrential incisions (the Valle dell'Ischiele and the Scorzai Valley) isolate the town from neighboring settlements: Cembra to the north-east and Ceola di Giovo to the west.

Background

The town of Lisignago was part of the Roman Empire and the Lombard Duchy of Trento, founded in 1004 or 1027 by the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire and suppressed on December 26, 1802.The jurisdiction of Cembra, of which Lisignago was part, was incorporated into that of Königsberg (Montereale), usurped by the counts of Tyrol in 1276.The first document containing the name of the town (villa) was drawn up in the monastery of the Benedictine monks of S. Lorenzo in Trento on August 30th 1166 and a copy of October 7th 1222 has reached us. There is clear talk of rights that existed regarding the income of the country, understood as a group of houses with cultivated and uncultivated funds.

In a document of 1210 it is clearly called "comunitas", ie municipality, independent administrative district. As regards the internal political-administrative structure, the town enjoyed a certain autonomy, meticulously regulated by the municipal statute called Rule Card. Through its elaboration, the community assumed its own identity with certain characteristics linked to geographical position, resources, agricultural production and main economic activities. fountains etc. were taken by a majority, with the presence of at least two thirds of the heads of the family, who had the right and the duty to intervene in the public assembly. of the church of S. Biagio, has been lost. The rules contained therein, integrated and modified, have been a constant point of reference over the centuries and through them, the men of the Municipality became aware of their own authority and autonomy.

Until the end of the 18th century the town enjoyed peace and tranquility. Between 1797 and 1803 it had to suffer the storm of the various passages of the Napoleonic army. In 1803 the Episcopal Principality of Trento, of which Lisignago was a part, was incorporated into the County of Tyrol, which in 1805 was removed from theAustria and annexed to BavariaIn 1810 the southern Tyrol was ceded to the Italian Kingdom of the French to return to Austria in 1814. In 1918 the country, together with the rest of the Trentino Alto Adige, became part of Italy.

What see

Church of San Leonardo
  • 1 Church of San Biagio. It was built in the 13th century and transformed in the second half of the 19th century. The bell tower with Romanesque mullioned windows is preserved from the ancient building.
  • Church of San Leonardo. Located on a rocky hill, it was rebuilt in the Gothic style in the fifteenth century. Its origins, however, are much older: a legend tells that under its floor there is a basement, a remnant of an ancient castle. Inside the church there are valuable frescoes from the second half of the fifteenth century. The bell tower houses one of the oldest bells in the entire valley.
  • Path of the Dürer. It follows the itinerary followed by Albrecht Dürer (Nuremberg 1471 - 1528) when in 1494 he made his journey to Italy. In Trentino the route starts from Salorno and arrives at the Pyramids of Segonzano.

Sites of environmental interest

The territory of the former municipality is largely covered by meadows and woods. There are also wetlands and biotopes in the area.

Holy Lake
  • Holy Lake. It is a lake of glacial origin located between Mount Pincaldo and Mount Cembra, whose existence is substantially due to the damming of the surrounding moraine deposits.
It is about five kilometers from the town of Cembra; the surface freezes in winter, making it suitable for curling. It is a famous tourist destination throughout the valley.
The name of the lake derives from a local legend according to which in its place there was once a land disputed between several heirs; one of them, exasperated by the continuous quarrels, prayed that a lake would rise in place of the ground and so it happened, but the water that continued to rise risked endangering the town of Cembra. The parish priest then threw inside the ring that adorned a statue of the Madonna, stopping the rising of the water and saving the town.
It passed near the lake at the end of 1400 Albrecht Dürer, on its way to Venice, who painted it in some watercolors.
Val di Cembra
  • Val di Cembra (Zimmerstal). Located on the left bank of the Adige river, it is crossed by the Avisio torrent; can be reached from Adige Valley, taking a Lavis the state road 612 that goes up the Avisio valley until reaching Val di Fiemme, or at the height of San Michele all'Adige the SP 131 Strada del vino / San Michele-Giovo; it can also be reached from Valsugana taking the SP 71 Fersina-Avisio at the height of Civezzano.
The valley is made up of a series of small inhabited centers, lying on slopes and often characterized by a particular housing and architectural typology: some Cembran villages in fact have houses gathered and leaning one next to the other.
From an orographic point of view, the valley is located within the Fiemme Dolomites and divides the Northern Fiemme Dolomites from the Southern Fiemme Dolomites.
In the municipality of Segonzano there are particular earth pinnacles with very suggestive shapes, known as Pyramids or Omeni of Segonzano, result of the disintegration of the mountains and the action of water.
One of the most important resources of the valley is agriculture and in particular viticulture, followed by fruit growing (especially small fruits such as strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, etc.). The landscape of the valley is marked by the presence of numerous vineyards, supported by large terraces. However, the characteristic construction of dry terraced vineyards did not negatively affect the territory, but rather maintained a landscape typical of the Avisian hills. The wine production is of high quality and quantitatively very significant in the Trentino area; particularly famous is the variety Müller Thurgau.
Another very important economic resource for the valley is represented by the extraction and processing of porphyry. This activity has heavily modified the appearance of the entire valley due to the presence of both the enormous open-air quarries and the landfills of inert residues from porphyry extraction.
  • Peat bog of Lagabrun. A biotope that serves as a habitat for some rare invertebrates, such as Agabus lagabrunensis, a species of beetle in the Dytiscidae family
