Niesky was founded in 1742 as a colony of Moravian Brethren, a Protestant faith movement that developed from the Bohemian Brothers of the Czech reformer Jan Hus ("Hussites"). The first residents were Protestant religious refugees who had been expelled from the re-Catholicized Bohemia and were invited by the landowner Siegmund August von Gersdorff to settle on his lands in Upper Lusatia. The place name is derived from the Czech word nízký, "Low", from. This is to be understood in a geographical sense, as the place, unlike the bohemian homeland of the settlers, is in the lowlands. At the same time, the place name emphasized in the religious understanding how simple, small and low man is before God.
The town center around the central Zinzendorfplatz still has the original arrangement from the 18th century in the simple rural baroque. The oldest buildings in the city also date from this period.
Until the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the place belonged to the Electorate or Kingdom of Saxony, then it was added to the Province of Silesia in the Kingdom of Prussia. After 1945 it was reintegrated into the Free State of Saxony.
Niesky's economic history is closely related to the company Christoph & Unmack connected. In the course of industrialization, the workshop of the coppersmith Johann Ehregott Christoph developed into an expanding steel and mechanical engineering company. Timber construction established itself as a further company in 1887 when the Danish joiner Christoph and the architect Unmack moved their barracks factory to Niesky. The company initially produced collapsible and transportable barracks for the Prussian military. Around 1900, country and family houses made of prefabricated wooden parts in panel and block construction were added to the production program. The industrially prefabricated elements could be transported as panels to the desired location and installed there. From Niesky they were exported to South Africa, South America and the Caribbean.
In 1917, Christoph & Unmack AG expanded its business model to include wagon construction. A few years later the companies merged as "Christoph & Unmack AG, Niesky / OL" with four divisions - timber construction, wagon construction, steel construction, engine construction - and around 4,000 employees. Konrad Wachsmann was chief architect at Christoph & Unmack from 1926 to 1929. Among other things, he designed the director's residence named after him and Albert Einstein's summer house in Caputh near Potsdam. Model settlements of these (then) modern wooden houses from the 1920s still characterize the cityscape today. Wagon construction and steel construction were continued as state-owned companies during the GDR era. The wagon construction still exists today as ELH Waggonbau Niesky GmbH. However, its owners have changed several times since reunification, most recently in September 2018.
From 1947 to 1994 Niesky was the district town of the district of the same name (identifier 'NY') and from 1996 to 2008 of the Lower Silesian Upper Lusatia District. One consequence of this is that Niesky is still allowed to call himself a “large district town” despite a population of less than 10,000.

The city consists of five districts. These are:
- 1 Niesky core city with 7,958 inhabitants.
- 2 Kosel (Upper Sorbian Kózło) (377 inhabitants) is located, surrounded by forests and ponds, approx. 7 km north of Niesky on the edge of the biosphere reserve "Upper Lusatian heather and pond landscape". The district is characterized by agriculture. One of the sights is the church. Its tower is clad in wood and has a baroque dome covered with slate.
- 3 Stannewisch (Stanojšćo) (174 inhabitants) is located directly on the federal highway 115 between Niesky and Rietschen. The outdoor pool is an attractive leisure facility with a water area, play areas and relaxation areas, and there is an adjacent game reserve.
- 4 Ödernitz (Wódrjeńca) (224 inhabitants) is located approx. 3 km southeast of the center of the city of Niesky. The village is characterized by two and three-sided courtyards as well as individual buildings in typical local construction on both sides of the village street. The former manor as a four-sided courtyard also defines the townscape.
- 5 Lake (Jězor) (1,119 inhabitants) is the largest among the districts of the city of Niesky. Lake is part of the Upper Lusatian heath and pond landscape, which is characterized by numerous ponds, lakes and forests and is therefore one of Germany's most forested and water-rich areas. In the south the place borders on the landscape protection area Quitzdorf dam. With a well-developed infrastructure, the See district has also become home to many people from the surrounding cities in recent years.

Towers
![](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/31/Niesky_-_Muskauer_Straße_-_Waggonbau_02_ies.jpg/200px-Niesky_-_Muskauer_Straße_-_Waggonbau_02_ies.jpg)
There are some interesting towers to discover in Niesky. Unfortunately, none of these structures can be visited. Nevertheless, they are worth seeing and shape the townscape.
- 13 Tower building of the former Niesky company Christoph & Unmack, Muskauer Strasse 49, 02906 Niesky. Immediately at the level crossing in Muskauer Strasse, the tower built around 1900 by Christoph & Unmack, a company that was once influential in Niesky, rises into the sky. A sgraffito "Waggonbau Niesky OL" is emblazoned on the south side.
- 14 Small, old water tower, Plittstrasse, 02906 Niesky. The foundation stone for the central water supply in Niesky was laid in 1894. The 17 m high, 70 m³ water tower built around 1900 had already reached its capacity limit after the First World War.
- 15 Niesky water tower, Plittstrasse, 02906 Niesky. The 25 m high water tower built in 1928 directly next to the smaller tower has a capacity of 300 m³ and is still in operation today. The appealing reinforced concrete skeleton building with brick walls impresses with the contrasting play of light-colored concrete surfaces and red-brown clinker bricks, with a flat conical roof at the top.
- 16 Ödernitz water tower, Fritz-Schubert-Strasse 19, 02906 Niesky, OT-Ödernitz. The water tower built in 1920 could hold 52 m³. Originally the tower had a half-hip roof made of wood and cardboard and was 21.35 m high. The worn roof had to be replaced as early as 1934. The flat roof, which is still preserved today, resulted in a reduced overall height of 19.65 m. Until when the tower served as a water reservoir is not known. After extensive renovation, it now serves as a work space for an engineering office, and the water tank is preserved as an industrial monument.
- 17 Watch tower, (northwest of the sister plantation) (west of the Waldstadion). The watchtower, built in 1835, replaced an old, wooden lookout tower that collapsed in a storm in 1833. It stands in the forest near the forest stadium, surrounded by tall trees that prevent its function as a lookout tower. (For details see Newspaper articles from 04/26/2017).
Parks
- 18 Monplaisir park, Am Kurzen Haag / Parkstrasse, 02906 Niesky. The historic park Monplaisir (French: my pleasure) has since been revived through civic engagement. The former school park of the pedagogy was created by the students themselves. The educational concept of the famous boarding school of the Moravian Brethren included practical work, sport and exercise in the fresh air, as well as natural history studies. A walk in the park, which is equipped with various monuments, visual axes and winding paths, is now a real pleasure again.
