Oestrich-Winkel is a city on the right bank of the Rhine in Rheingau in Hesse.

The wine town of Oestrich-Winkel consists of 4 districts: Oestrich, Mittelheim, Winkel (directly on the Rhine) and Hallgarten on a hill behind. It is not far from Wiesbaden between Eltville on the Rhine and Rudesheim. The city is located in the most famous German Riesling growing area Rheingau and is characterized by viticulture. The districts of Oestrich, Mittelheim and Winkel are directly connected on the banks of the Rhine. Hallgarten a few kilometers north in the middle of the vineyards.

In addition to viticulture, plastics processing is an important line of business. Since 1980 Oestrich-Winkel has been the seat of the European Business School, a private university for economics and law and thus a university town.

The Rheingau line runs in Oestrich-Winkel RB 10 (Frankfurt (Main) Hbf - Frankfurt (Main) Höchst - Wiesbaden Hbf - St.Goarshausen - Lahnstein - Koblenz - Neuwied) every hour.

Oestrich-Winkel is located directly on the B42. In the direction of Wiesbaden, the B42 turns into the A66. The old B42a runs through the city. The Rhine cycle path runs along the banks of the Rhine from Eltville am Rhein and Rüdesheim am Rhein to Oestrich-Winkel.

By boat

  • Car ferry from Mittelheim to Frei-Weinheim (district of Ingelheim) in Rheinhessen.
  • Excursions on the Rhine are offered for larger groups, but no Rhine excursion steamers stop the line in Oestrich-Winkel.

In Oestrich:

  • Oestrich crane - Old wine loading crane from 1745 on the banks of the Rhine with two large wooden treadwheels, each of which was moved by 2 men. With it, barrels with 1,200 liters of wine could be loaded. On the 1st weekend of the months from April to October, the crane is open between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.
  • Parish Church of St. Martin. 1503 Start of construction of today's church. Destroyed in the 30 years war. Rebuilt after 1648. 1893 Restoration of the church in the style of 1635.
  • Market square with town hall - construction started in 1504, destroyed by Sweden in the 30 Years War, then rebuilt. Today used by the European Business School as well as gastronomically.
  • Gasthaus Krone - on the market square. 1540 start of construction. Catering business discontinued.
  • Hotel Schwan - construction began in 1628.
  • Reichartshausen Castle (1742) close Eltville on the Rhine - today the seat of the European Business School

In Mittelheim:

  • Old Basilica of St. Aegidius built around 1100 as the church of an Augustinian convent. Oldest church in the Rheingau
  • old City Hall built in 1504, renovated after a fire around 1700
  • Reitz'scher Hof. Renaissance building built in 1559 with a square sundial and medallion of a head below the gable.
  • Helenenhof Built around 1720 as the country house of the Frankfurt wine merchant Georg Friedrich Lind. Right-angled plant
