Playa de las Americas is an artificial town in the south of Tenerife and administratively belongs to Arona. In the 1970s the plan arose to build a hotel on this beach in order to attract tourists from Central Europe for the burgeoning air tourism. The idea, initially ridiculed, turned out to be correct.
