Wheel - Rad

An alternative route to the Danube Cycle Path from Vienna to Bratislava leads through Marchfeld. You can even walk from city limit to city limit between the two capitals.

Route profile

  • length: 37 km
  • Signage: No!
  • Slopes: No significant differences in altitude to cope with. The route leads through the flat Marchfeld.
  • Path state: Between the places you use field or goods roads, which are usually not paved, but are in a very good condition (compact, fine gravel, which can also be used when it rains).
  • Traffic load: The first three kilometers (Neuessling-Raasdorf) run on a busy state road (no sidewalk or bike path). Then the route leads over field and goods roads and you only meet a few cyclists and occasionally agricultural traffic. One moves within the towns on normal local roads.

background

See also:Vienna-Bratislava cycle and hiking trail (variant) / GpxVienna-Bratislava is the capital city pair that is the third closest apart in the world (approx. 60 km as the crow flies from city center to city center). The distance between the city limits is significantly shorter.

Developed as an idea among friends, the shortest route from Vienna to Bratislava (city limits - city limits, 37 km) was first walked and documented in May 2015. This route is also a good alternative route to the cycle path along the Danube, as it is shorter.

The following is a description of the route for hikers on the Vienna-Bratislava route. The route description for cyclists does not differ from this.

preparation

  • On foot: You have to be prepared for at least eight hours of walking. On the way there are only sparse restaurants and local suppliers, so you should bring enough provisions with you. Sun and rain protection can also do no harm, as well as a flashlight if you are surprised by the darkness on the way. Good walking shoes are a must anyway!
  • By bicycle the above also applies, but the route can be mastered in well under three hours. Since there are practically no inclines, no mountain bike is required. The good condition of the roads and the low traffic allow children and inexperienced cyclists to have a pleasant ride.
  • Since the route is not signposted, you should download the route to your mobile phone or GPS beforehand. If the battery runs out while on the move, it pays to have a paper card with you. Recommended cards:
    • Federal Office for Metrology and Surveying (BEV): Austrian map 1: 50,000, map sheets 5320 Vienna and 5321 Gänserndorf.
    • OpenStreetMap and Google Maps also provide good coverage of the route network, but you should be able to fall back on a paper map in an emergency if the smartphone battery runs out.
