Hermitage of Santa Rosalia

This hermitage is located along the slopes of Mount Quisquina at 986 m a.s.l. It was built around the mid-1600s in the place where Santa Rosalia remained in hermitage inside a cave for twelve years (probably from 1150 to 1162). The hermitage grew over time thanks to donations and is now managed by the Pro Loco. In addition to the church and the monastic premises, it is possible to visit the cave of Santa Rosalia with a lying statue that represents it. Upon accessing the cave, on the left at half height you can see an inscription which, according to legend, was traced by the Saint.

This theater was built by a pastor artist named Lorenzo Reina, owner of the land on which it stands which he thought of building a theater inspired by the shape of the Andromeda constellation for which there are only 108 seats. In addition to being placed in a panoramic point from which you can see Santo Stefano, you can admire the landscape of central Sicily and on the days of the summer solstice the disc placed in front of the stage door casts a shadow on the circle of the stage. Same thing for one of the statues with an open mouth, from which the sun passes through the mouth in those days. The entire theater is a work of art to be admired. Events and parties

  • Feast of Santa Rosalia. Simple icon time.svgfirst Sunday in June until Wednesday. The festival lasts for 5 days, in which the bust with the relics is carried in procession through the town. Meanwhile, games are organized in the square, folk groups and singers. On Tuesday, a procession accompanies the bust of the sanctuzza from the Mother Church to the Hermitage. In the late afternoon, a long procession of faithful escorts the return of the sanctuary to the entrance of the town up to the Mother Church.

  • Feast of San Calogero. Simple icon time.svg17 and 18 June. After the Vespers the simulacrum of the Saint is carried on the shoulders by the faithful from the Mother Church to the small church on top of the homonymous mountain 3 km from the town. Upon arrival, pilgrims are offered blessed bread with ricotta, boiled potatoes, hard-boiled eggs and wine. The devotees spend the night on the lace and the following morning the procession returns to the village, where the celebrations continue.
