Thigh cell is a place in Kinzigtal, at the confluence of the Kinzig and small Kinzig im Middle Black Forest. It lies between Alpirsbach and Schiltach. The landmark is the Schenkenburg castle ruins.

background

The origin of Schenkenzell can be traced back to the 13th century. The first mention in 1244; this year, Hermanus Schenk von Celle is mentioned as a documentary witness. In 1325 Luitgard von Wittichen founded the Wittichen monastery. Around 1500 the lords of Geroldseck had to sell their lands to the princes of Fürstenberg.

Since they got into a dispute with their feudal lord, Hans von Weitingen, the Schenkenburg was set on fire and destroyed in 1534. Since then only the ruin has remained.

Agriculture and forestry have been an important source of income over the centuries. The wood was rafted as far as the Rhine / Ruhr area and Holland on the rivers.

There it was used for shipbuilding, town planning on marshland (Amsterdam was mainly built on Black Forest wood) and of course for export.

The last heyday of mining began around 1700 in the Kaltbrunn district. In addition to silver, cobalt was mainly extracted at that time, which was also processed in the Schenkenzeller district and exported to Holland (the famous “Delft blue” in the porcelain industry).
