Schmallenberg is a Westphalian city in Sauerland in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia is located on the southern border of the Hochsauerlandkreis. The main ridge of the Rothaargebirge forms, starting from Bare branches, the southern city limits. The Lenne flows around 29.8 km through the urban area in predominantly western directions. Schmallenberg was a member of the Hanseatic League in the Middle Ages. Later, the city with the local hosiery production became the center of the Sauerland textile industry. The structure of today's town Schmallenberg with the nickname Stocking city goes back to the municipal reorganization of 1975. Of the more than 25,000 residents registered with their primary residence, the core town of Schmallenberg accounts for around a quarter of the population, and Bad Fredeburg for just under a sixth. Nine other districts have a population between around 500 and 1,600, 45 districts have fewer than 100 inhabitants.

About four kilometers northwest of the city center is the Schmallenberg-Rennefeld special airfield (ICAO code: EDKR).

The nearest commercial airport is the Paderborn / Lippstadt Airport (ICAO code: EDLP, IATA code: PAD) near Büren, about 70 kilometers from Schmallenberg. More distant airports are the Dortmund Airport (ICAO code: EDLW, IATA code: DTM; about 90 km away) and the Cologne / Bonn Airport (ICAO code: EDDK, IATA code: CGN; about 120 km away).

By train

Trains of the Ruhr-Lippe regional transport go towards Dortmund, Brilon and Winterberg. Stops in the around 35 km away Meschede are the train stations Meschede and Freienohl. The Ruhr-Sieg route leads from Hagen to Wins. The closest train station is in Lennestadt-Altenhundem, 18 km away.

There are four state-approved health resorts in the city. The Schmallenberger core town and Nordenau are state-approved climatic health resorts. Bad Fredeburg is a state-approved Kneipp spa. Grafschaft is a recognized climatic health resort.

  • Rothaarsteig - The 164 km long ridge path of the Rothaargebirge runs through Schmallenberg.
  • Bike paths: The Sauerland bike ring and the Lenneroute also run via Schmallenberg.
  • In the Westfeld cross-country skiing center, 4–6 km of trails are artificially snowed when there is not enough snow. In the Schmallenberg region, 80 km of trails are groomed if the snow conditions allow.
