Sochi (in Russian: Со́чи, in Georgian : სოჭი) is a seaside resort in Krasnodar Krai, in Russia.

Understand

Situated on the shores of the Black Sea and at the foot of the Caucasus Mountains, Sochi owes its beaches and the healthy subtropical climate to being a renowned holiday resort since XIXe century.

Strong of more than 350,000 inhabitants and in the heart of an agglomeration of nearly 450,000 inhabitants (The "Great Sochi"), nicknamed "the pearl of the black sea", it is the main city of the "Russian Riviera" (Русская Ривьера). Very popular during the Soviet period, it experienced a relative decline in the 1990s before experiencing a resurgence in popularity in the 2000s.

Frequented for decades by the country's leaders (from Stalin to Vladimir Putin), many celebrities also have dachas here. Large hotel complexes testify to its tourist dynamism at the start of the XXIe century.

Since 1991, Sochi has hosted the main Russian film festival (Kinotavr) every year. In February 2014, it was also the host city of the 22nd Olympic Winter Games.

Located at the same latitude as the Côte d'Azur and benefiting from the shelter of the Caucasus against air inlets from the North and Siberia, Sochi enjoys a very mild climate. Indeed, like the entire coastal zone bordering the Black Sea located south of the city of Tuapse, Sochi enjoys a humid subtropical climate. Temperatures in winter rarely drop below freezing. Summer temperatures are on average between 26 ° C and 28 ° C for the maximums. However in winter snow and frost are possible in Sochi. Rainfall is abundant throughout the year with an annual total of 1 644 mm, the wettest months being those of November and December.

By plane

The city is served by an airport: Sochi International Airport (Russian: Международный аэропорт Сочи), located in the Adler district and fully modernized from 2004 in anticipation of the 2014 Olympics. Commissioned in 2010 , the new terminal was designed to facilitate exchanges and make the city an important correspondence platform at regional and national level. The frequency of flights varies with the time of year, with a maximum number of flights at the height of the tourist season, between May and September. In winter, delays are possible depending on weather conditions. Krasnodar and Gelendzhik airports can then serve as alternatives.
