Spineda is a center of the Lombardy.

To know

A small agricultural center on the plain, it lives in seclusion in the fertile Lombard countryside.

Geographical notes

It is located in the Lower Lombard plain, between Cremona and Mantua, and is part of the interprovincial area Casalasco viadanese - Oglio Po-. It is 15 kilometers from Casalmaggiore; 22 from Viadana; 53 from Cremona; 27 from Mantua.

Background

The area has produced findings of prehistoric age in the locality of Campo Baiano and in the locality of Campo Prebenda Parrocchiale: obsidian blades, fragments of Venus clay, fragments of square-mouthed vases, from the Middle Neolithic, and others from the Bronze Age, preserved at the Civic Viadana[1].

Spineda enters history around the year 1000, when his name begins to appear on documents. The Benedictine abbey of Leno, which already controlled the territory, was confirmed in its rights in 1177 by Federico Barbarossa. In 1194 Spineda then passed to the Abbey of San Benedetto in Polirone, to then become the possession of the Municipality of Cremona. With the advent of the regional states, Spineda passes to the Milanese; wedged in the territory of the Gonzagas of Mantua, lives continuously between border fights, troops passages, on a couple of occasions even looting, as well as a period of belonging to Venice, from 1427 to 1438.

A history of wars and armed struggles that has an illustrious precedent: tradition has it that in the Spineda wood, in 1052, Matilde di Canossa's father, Bonifacio degli Attoni, killed by Scarpetta da Parma.

With the end of the Gonzagas, the tranquility of life that has accompanied it to the present day arrived for Spineda, discarding the uncomfortable borderland clothes.

Spineda (Cr) - Parish Church of San Salvatore 05
  • Parish Church of San Salvatore. It is often called the small Cathedral of Casalmaggiore; but this sentence must not be misleading. The foundation of the church of Spineda precedes the erection of the Casalasco Cathedral. The comparison stands perhaps only for the fact that the Spinedese church was built in the nineteenth century with neoclassical canons, a Greek cross and with a tympanum on the facade as Casalmaggiore.
The architect Carlo Visioli designed and built it from 1837 to 1843, replacing the old church which was demolished. It was probably founded by the Benedictine monks of Leno, who enjoyed the possession of the place, which appears in the list of appurtenances of that monastery in the papal bull of Gregory VII of August 17, 1177. In the current church next to the Greek cross body rises the bell tower in Romanesque style with a square plan, with an octagonal dome and lantern, which reaches about 31 meters in height.
Inside there are paintings and furnishings of the ancient church. The work depicting the Madonna and the mysteries of the rosary, perhaps of one of the Lodi, active in the Malosso workshop. To remember also the Baptism, the Nativity', the Resurrection.

Monumental farmhouse
  • Villa Cavalcabo '. Built around 1550, the villa makes a fine show of itself on the road that leads from Cividale Mantovano to Spineda, outside the town. It was immediately the home of the Marquises Cavalcabo ', Lords of Viadana. With Agostino IV Cavalcabo ', born in Spineda, the villa was remodeled and enlarged towards the end of the eighteenth century, as confirmed by the stylistic aspect of the building. It was equipped with an enclosure on the back (il brolo) with fruits, pergolas and vegetables. This space was converted into a park in 1848. The two additions of the lateral buildings are also eighteenth-century.
The central portal connected to the balcony brings us back to the sixteenth century, in addition to the scanning of the curvilinear gables of the windows on the first floor which contrast with the triangular gables of the ground floor, with square windows in the attic and string courses.
The villa is surrounded by a high wall. The garden that embellishes the main facade is accessed by an imposing gate enclosed in a portal surmounted by a tympanum supported by two Ionic columns, built on a project by the architect Luigi Voghera.
On the other side of the road there is a large farmhouse, with a large courtyard which is accessed by a majestic arch with Doric columns, which was probably conceived as a service structure of the Villa.

  • Sabbioneta - City of foundation, UNESCO World Heritage Site, maintains the walls within which the magic of ideal urban planning by Vespasiano Gonzaga has remained intact; the Teatro all'Antica, the Ducal Palace, the Gallery, the Incoronata church are some of its monuments that stand out in a context that has been admirably preserved.
  • Rivarolo Mantovano - The arcaded Gonzaga square is the fulcrum of Rivarolo Mantovano which owes its physiognomy to Vespasiano Gonzaga, who here experimented with the construction of the Ideal City and then completed with the nearby Sabbioneta. Its urban layout, checkerboard, its city gates, the round of the walls for the remaining part, the buildings, the views make it a timeless center.
  • Cocoon - Gonzaga city, it was the capital of a duchy of a collateral branch of the Gonzaga. Vespasiano worked there urban planning before putting his hand to his masterpiece: Sabbioneta; with Giulio Cesare and Scipione he defines his own elegant urban appearance that responds to sixteenth-century ideals. Of the ancient walls, however, only a short section remains, severely damaged by collapses and neglect.
  • Casteldidone - Villa Mina della Scala is a fascinating castle building that embodies the grandeur of the castle and the elegance of the villa. Built in the sixteenth century, remodeled in the seventeenth century and then in the eighteenth century, the castle that became a palace and villa still looks majestic and fascinating in the countryside of Casteldidone, not far from the other splendid villa - castle of San Giovanni in Croce.
  • San Giovanni in Croce - Villa Medici del Vascello is the castle of the Lady of the Ermine of the famous painting by Leonardo da Vinci. It was Cecilia Gallerani, the Lady of the portrait, who began her transformation from a military structure to a stately home, lightening the warlike aspect of its primitive fifteenth-century foundation. The Villa is surrounded by a large park and a high wall that does not prevent you from seeing its elegant beauty.
  • Casalmaggiore - Capital of Casalasco, protected by mighty embankments, the city develops parallel to the bed of the Po. The wide breath of the main square, the undeniable majesty of the Town Hall and the Cathedral reveal its character as an important center of the Bassa. The Sanctuary of the Madonna della Fontana, the church of Santa Chiara, the church of the Hospital are among its outstanding monuments.
  • Mantua - Capital of the Gonzagas, it still exudes its subtle charm of a great city of art for which it appoints it a UNESCO World Heritage Site it was not so much a recognition as a necessary acknowledgment. Its ancient atmospheres are incomparable, the profiles of the palaces and domes that stand out in the Po Valley mist enveloped by the mirror of its lakes, its endless Gonzaga palace that incorporates numerous buildings in the city center.
