The first signs of Torri in medieval times date back to 747, when in the register of Farfa the donation to the abbey of a appears casalis Turris; this donation is confirmed in the following centuries up to 1084. Instead, the attestation of the existence of a castle, which appears to be the property of the Holy See in 1364, dates back to 1298. who kept the property until the death of Flavio Orsini's wife, Anna de la Tremouille, in 1728. From this date Torri returned to the ownership of the Holy See. In 1817 the town became part, as an autonomous municipality, of the governorate of Calvi. After the unification of Italy, the municipality was first assigned to the province of Perugia, in 1923 to the province of Rome and finally from 1927 it became part of the new province of Rieti.

Archaeological sites

  • Novum Forum. Novum Forum (later called Bishopric) was a Roman merchant center located in the current territory of Torri in Sabina.
In the first century it was elevated to the dignity of municipium and was therefore mentioned by Pliny in the Naturalis Historia.
It was active from the Republican age until the 4th century AD, when a market was still present and, even with a small population, it continued to survive thanks also to the establishment of an episcopal see, hence the term Vescovìo. The colony was finally destroyed during the Saracen raids of the 9th century culminating in that of 846 and the Romanesque church of Santa Maria della Lode was built on its vestiges.
The first archaeological research, up to the beginning of the 80s, revealed the presence of a basilica, a templar complex, part of the forum and other associated buildings of indefinite function.
New research was undertaken in 1997 by the British School at Rome and thanks to geophysical surveys and through Georadar it was understood that the area should not be very populated; the only domestic buildings found were small tabernae, even if an urban villa was identified near the city center, as well as an amphitheater and the spa complex; it was therefore assumed that the center should have a rural character, with monuments erected thanks to the contribution of local elites. Other very recent excavations (2013) have identified the path of the aqueduct, largely preserved and functioning.
