Geographical notes

Residence center of the Val di Non, is 14 km from Lake Tovel, 5 from Cles, 22 from Mezzolombardo, 31 from Folgarida, 42 from Trento, 43 from Madonna of Campiglio.

Background

The Tuenno community is counted among the oldest in the Val di Non; in fact we find signs of its presence already during the Rhaetian period and its population is mixed with the Romans well before 46 AD. The village developed on the confluence of the itineraries coming from Nanno, Mechel and Tassullo. In their intersection, the colomelli of Moscovia, Dausinà and Menavilla were formed. Those were the most important streets of the past, the Via Traversara above all, which from the Palade pass along the right bank of the Novella stream reached Cles to touch Mechel and descend to Tuenno. C. the Tuenno lords built their castle in the wooded offshoots of Snao, guarding the important road which was the Traversara.

In 1520 it obtained religious independence from the parish church of Tassullo, which became complete in 1571. In 1407 the castle was also demolished: it was the brothers Paolo and Volcmaro de Cazuffo together with Clemente de Mazugo who instigated the people of Tuenno to revolt: the Camuffos to gain success and dominion over the territory, the people in the belief that they will forever get rid of the intrigues provoked by the increasingly oppressive fiscal voracity of the castle nobility. When the revolt subsided, the Cazuffo family left to express themselves at their best in Trento, with offices and honors and a palace in Piazza Duomo. And the daughter Imparisa of the last of the Mazugo family left Tuenno in 1462, wife of Pietro Tomeo Rolandini di Dambel in fief of the Procellario castle in Rumo. The consequent privileges granted in 1407 by the Prince bishop of Trento, George I of Liechtenstein, to the populations of the Valli di Non and di Sole, managed to alleviate the impositions and increase greater freedom to the initiatives of the people.

The Charter summarized the customs of the time by confirming the income of the countryside, grazing, wood and grape harvest. In 1767 the traditional assembly of the heads of the families was canceled, which had been the councilor for centuries. From now on they would elect their representatives, 25 men with a Regolan, four Chiefs would represent their own colonel, the meetings would take place in the house of one or the other of the Chiefs with the jump at the door to prevent the listening to intruders. It was the first step towards current events. The economy was also evolving with the cultivation of potatoes and the spread of jasmine cultivation with good results, to the point that Vincenzo Maistrelli, father of the more famous "Maistrel", on 9 May 1837 already then ensured "spinning mill and galete" with the Insurance General Austro Italica. Unfortunately, cholera was spreading that year, the plague that culminated in Tuenno in 1855 with 192 deaths.

The 1800 was the century that revolutionized traditions, encouraged the birth of new carriage roads, activated the compulsory normal school for adolescents, completed the sculpted and perforated aqueduct in the mountain, enlarged the parish church and raised its imposing bell tower. , saw many families emigrating to the United States of America to increase the economic possibilities, the aquarium consortium, the social cellar, the social dairy, the cooperative family, the rural fund, the kindergarten and other social activities were born. It was in the midst of that turmoil that Vincenzo Maistrelli was born, in 1835: creator and builder of the Tuenno and Cles power plant and of the Tassullo cement plant, and so gradually Tuenno moved towards its current position. In 1963 the town hall was moved from the old building in via Garibaldi, now home to the middle school, to a more functional one in piazza degli Alpini. Construction in recent years has had a significant increase and has expanded into the suburbs forming new pigeons. The sprinkler irrigation system, with autonomous electronic supply, has developed agriculture in a rational and intensive way. The new and complex warehouses for the collection, storage, processing and sale of the now famous Golden and Renetta apples of Canada, combined with the automation of agricultural machinery, have favored their marketing and highlighted their quality.

The valley and the lake of Tovel attract summer tourism. The lake thrilled local and foreign admirers with its waters which turned bright red every summer, until the phenomenon ceased in 1964. Now its waters have become more soothing with a pleasant and intense green color that is clear and relaxing. The copious valley of larch and red and white fir trees with hard and incorruptible wood, animated the "yard" for the processing of the thousands of sleepers for the railway under construction along the Adige axis, in the last century; and already a century earlier that timber had been appreciated and requested for the reconstruction of the wooden bridge of S. Lorenzo in Trento, destroyed by the bombing carried out by the French troops of General Vendome. Three of those conifers adorn the Tuenno coat of arms since 1874 to illustrate the importance of the Tovel forest. Now the Val di Tovel, in addition to attracting summer tourism, is a base for excursions to the lake area, the Brenta Dolomites and the Adamello-Brenta Natural Park.
