What see

Inside Castel Valer - 15th century frescoes
Lake of Tovel
  • 1 Valer Castle. It was founded in 1211 by the Counts of Appiano, when they lived and reigned in the Val di Cembra. Later it passed to the Counts of Tirolo and the Coredo. In 1368 it became the property of the Sporo (or Spaur) whose descendants still live there.
It develops around the octagonal keep which with its 40 m is considered the highest tower in the province of Trento. It was built using granite stones absent in val di Non, but carried through the Passo del Tonale from the Adamello Group.
The castle is quite large with more than 100 rooms, some of which are richly decorated like the Hall of Coats of Arms or le Madruzziane rooms. The buildings that contain them are usually divided into two groups:
- the Castel di Sotto which is the oldest nucleus
- the Castel di Sopra made up of buildings dating back to the 15th century.
In the chapel of the manor, dedicated to San Valerio (hence the name perhaps), there is a cycle of frescoes by the Bergamo painters Giovanni and Battista Baschenis, from the 15th century. The castle is privately owned and therefore cannot be visited except for special events.
  • 2 Lake of Tovel. Lake Tovel is located in the heart of the Adamello-Brenta Natural Park, in the territory of Tuenno which with Nanno and Tassullo joined to form the new municipality of Ville d'Anaunia. The lake mirror is famous for the red color that once characterized its waters. The area is an important reserve of the brown bear, an animal symbol of the park and of the lake in particular, around which there are various groups of individuals. Other species that are easier to meet are the chamois and the alpine frog. As for the flora, the dominant trees are conifers, while various alpine flowers are present at the herbaceous level.
It is recommended to visit the lake between March and October, when the snow does not make it difficult to reach the place; however, it can be visited all year round.
