Castle and Rococo garden

Castle building

lock

balustrade

The predecessor of today's castle was a "summer or pleasure house" in the courtyard garden and was built between 1680-1682 under Prince-Bishop von Dernbach, presumably according to plans by the architect Antonio Petrini by the foreman Heinrich Zimmer. A hall with five arches on the ground floor is still preserved today.

From 1753 began under the prince-bishop Carl Philipp von Greiffenclau Balthasar Neumann the extension of the building with side pavilions, a representative staircase and the redesign of the ground floor with a balustrade that completely surrounds the building. Until 1802 the castle was used as the summer residence of the Würzburg bishops.

In 1814 the castle came to Bavaria with Würzburg and Lower Franconia and was also used as a summer castle by the Wittelsbachers in the 19th century. In 1919 the facility was taken over by the Bavarian Palace Administration. In 1931/32 the upper floor of the building was extensively restored and made accessible to the public. The last restoration was carried out from 2001 to 2005.

Tourist Attractions in the castle are:

  • The baroque interiors of the rooms on the upper floor: dining room with game tables, billiard room, study, living room and bedroom;
  • preserved Original stucco by Antonio Bossi, silk wall coverings;
  • In the stairwell: chapel with stucco altar by Antonio Bossi;
  • On the ground floor: exhibition on the history of the court garden with a historical model of the court garden, freely accessible

Rococo garden

The 13 hectare facility emerged from the former pheasant garden. The first drafts for the renovation as a "courtly ornamental and pleasure garden" came from Antonio Petrini, the first work began in 1702/1703 under Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp von Greiffenclau and was continued by his successors. The renovation was completed after around 50 years of construction with variable intensity in the middle of the 18th century. The design of the complex was carried out in six generations by the Orth court gardener family until the 19th century. Today the garden is considered to be one of the most beautiful and best preserved rococo gardens in Germany.
