Geographical notes
It is located in the Cremona countryside of the Lower Lombardy region, 14 km away. from Cremona, 38 from Casalmaggiore, 50 from Brescia and 56 from Mantua.
Background
Inhabited in Roman times, as evidenced by the numerous finds, the village was called Vicus Decius. In the Lombard period the Cremonese bishops Sixtus II and Desiderio abandoned Cremona and took refuge in Vescovato. In the XII and XIII the town was a possession of the Episcopal Curia. It was a military garrison and in the fourteenth century it passed as a fief to Anna, nephew of Buoso da Dovara and her husband Filippino Gonzaga, thus entering the group of Gonzaga possessions and marking a further expansion of the domains of that family in the territory of the right bank of the Oglio; the feud of Vescovato did not include Cà de 'Stefani.
The plagues and famines of the seventeenth century prostrated the area, which however was favored in its economic recovery by a Gonzaga fiscal policy of non-oppression and facilitation of trade.

What see
- Parish Church of San Leonardo. The parish church stands next to the Rocca and was built from 1776 to 1779. Its extension has given it a concrete facade different from the eighteenth-century one. It is decorated with six columns and six statues of saints placed on the pediment. Inside it preserves three marble altars, the canvas Nativity by Bernardino Gatti and the altarpiece by Benini depicting San Leonardo.
- Rocca. In the place of the pre-existing fortress the Gonzagas built a fortress in the sixteenth century which is the transformation of a building with military purposes into a castle residence. The passage of time has left serious traces on the building, of which some parts were demolished. After a restoration it is now used as an oratory.

Around
- Cicognolo - Exposed terracotta and marble make the impressive and varied appearance of the imposing Manfredi castle, scenographic in the green of the lawn that embellishes the ground in front of the main facade, with a romantic garden and moat behind it.
- Torre de 'Picenardi - Villa Sommi Picenardi developed from a pre-existing castle nucleus; starting from the sixteenth century it was transformed in the following centuries up to its present appearance. A body of the villa, in neoclassical style, overlooks the town square. A second factory develops inside and is connected to the ancient body of the primitive castle. A large garden surrounds the villa complex, surrounded by a large moat with water.
- San Lorenzo de 'Picenardi - Its castle, built in the fifteenth century, was enlarged over time to then arrive at its present form, majestic and decidedly castellana, in the nineteenth century, the work of the architect Luigi Voghera. The vast building, in perfect condition, shows numerous crenellated towers which give it the characteristic medieval aspect, however mitigated by the elegant character of a noble castle residence. It is surrounded by a large park.
- Sabbioneta - City of foundation, UNESCO World Heritage Site, maintains the walls within which the magic of ideal urban planning created by Vespasiano Gonzaga has remained intact; the Teatro all'Antica, the Ducal Palace, the Gallery, the Incoronata church are some of its monuments that stand out in a context that has been admirably preserved.
- Cremona - It has a monumental historic center - the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Town Hall - one of the most distinguished in Lombardy. It was a Roman city. It was powerful at the time of the Communes and rivaled Milan, which finally subdued it. His violins (Stradivari and Amati), his Torrazzo and even more his torrone, are known everywhere.
Itineraries
- In the lands of the Gonzagas - An itinerary through the centers, large and small, which were the capitals of the Gonzaga cadet branches: principalities, marquisates, duchies which, within the Mantuan state structure, enjoyed real independence, often minted coins and held refined courts that rivaled that of Mantua, embellished their urban centers by equipping them with elegant architecture - churches, squares, palaces, walls, towers - and characteristic urban views such as the typical Gonzaga arcades.
