In the Middle Ages the town was known as Rocca di Cerro or Rocca d'Acero from the name of an ancient castle. From some findings in the Amplero Valley and along the slopes of San Castro, site of a vico that existed in the third century BC. it has been possible to establish that the territory was part of the municipality of Angitiae (or Anxa), an ancient marsa city, located near the contemporary Luco dei Marsi. The village took shape in the era of the castle, around the year one thousand. It was a fiefdom, among other lordships, of the Marsi and Piccolomini counts. In contemporary times the town has suffered serious damage due to the earthquake of 13 January 1915 which caused 70 victims and about 200 injured here. After the inauguration of the Abruzzo National Park, which took place in September 1922, Villavallelonga was one of the founding bodies of the Marsican Forest Conduct, the first forestry conduit in Italy, established a month later, of which Erminio Sipari was the creator and first president.
