Zittau Mountains - Zittauer Gebirge

The Zittau Mountains lies in the Upper Lusatia, in the southeastern corner of Saxony, at the border triangle with Poland and the Czech Republic. The up to 792 m high ridge is part of the Lusatian Mountains, which partly also closes North Bohemia in Czech Republic belongs.

Neither of the two, however, has a convenient connection to the Zittau Mountains by public transport: from Dresden Airport you can take the train (two changes) for over three hours; from Prague with three changes over four hours. A flight there is only advisable if you take a rental car afterwards.

By train

Zittau is the end point of a two-hour Trilex (private regional train) and Trilex Express line (regional express) from Dresden. There is a connection to long-distance transport there. From Dresden you need 1½ hours (Express) or just under two hours (Trilex). In addition, the East German Railway runs every hour from Cottbus via Görlitz to Zittau (35 minutes from Görlitz, 1:50 hours from Cottbus). From Berlin you need 3:20 hours with a change in Cottbus. Every two hours there is a Trilex and Trilex-Express from Liberec in the Czech Republic to Zittau (30–35 minutes). A Trilex also runs every two hours from Rybniště in the Czech Republic via Großschönau to Zittau (35 minutes). From Prague you can either drive via Turnov and Liberec or via Děčín and Rybniště (from Prague 3:40 to 3:50 hours, from Mladá Boleslav two hours, from Děčín 1:40 hours)

In the street

From the A 4 motorway (Dresden – Görlitz – Breslau), junction Weißenberg, the B 178 or B 178n, which has been developed in sections like a motorway, leads into the Zittau Mountains. For the 125 km from Dresden you have to plan about an hour and a half drive. The journey via Bautzen is shorter in terms of distance, but takes longer due to the lower degree of expansion. From the direction of Görlitz you can travel parallel to the Neisse on the B 99, from Bautzen on the B 96. From Turnov and Liberec in the Czech Republic, the road I / 35, which is also largely motorway-like (European route 442), leads to the vicinity of the German-Polish-Czech border triangle. A journey time of 1½ hours is to be expected for the 135 km from Prague.

By bicycle

The Oder-Neisse cycle path leads from Görlitz (37 km), Rothenburg (68 km), Bad Muskau (110 km), Forest (near Cottbus; 140 km) and Guben (166 km upstream) or in the opposite direction from the source of the Neisse and Liberec to Zittau. The Germany Route D 4 (Mittelland Route) leads from Dresden along the northern edge of Saxon Switzerland and through southern Upper Lusatia to Zittau (approx. 110 km from Dresden).

The Zittau Mountains are in the tariff zone of the Zweckverband Verkehrsverbund Oberlausitz-Lower Silesia (ZVON). Its tickets are valid on regional trains and buses, but only to a limited extent on the trains of the Zittau narrow-gauge railway. Zittau narrow-gauge railway - The narrow-gauge steam train connects Zittau With Olbersdorf, Oybin and Jonsdorf in the mountains (Side of the narrow-gauge railway). The journey from Zittau to Olbersdorf takes approx. 20 minutes, to Bertsdorf 30 minutes, to Oybin or Jonsdorf 40 minutes. During the main season (Christmas, New Year's Eve and winter holidays in Berlin, Brandenburg, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia) four trains run daily and five on weekends from Zittau to Oybin; one on weekdays, three trains on weekends from Zittau to Jonsdorf. On the common route between Zittau and Bertsdorf there are five trains a day and nine trains in each direction at the weekend. Three trains run between Jonsdorf and Oybin on weekdays and four on weekends. By changing between the individual connections at the central Bertsdorf train station, there are even more connections. During the low season only two trains run daily from Zittau via Bertsdorf to Oybin and back, two trains from Oybin via Bertsdorf to Jonsdorf and two trains only between Oybin and Bertsdorf. During this time there is no continuous train route between Zittau and Jonsdorf. The one-way ticket costs between € 3 and € 9, depending on the distance. Children, trainees and students are entitled to discounts, and children up to 14 even travel free of charge when accompanied by an adult. You can also save if you buy a return ticket or a 10-trip ticket. The day pass of the ZVON transport association is also valid on the narrow-gauge railway.

A regular move (Trilex) also runs approximately every hour from Zittau to Großschönau (13 minutes) and Varnsdorf in the Czech Republic (18 minutes) and then either on to Seifhennersdorf (28 minutes) or Rybniště (40 minutes).

By bus

Bus traffic in the Zittau Mountains is operated by the Kraftverkehrsgesellschaft (KVG) tri-border region operated. Timetables look here.

Bus line 5 runs every hour from Zittau via Olbersdorf (15–20 minutes) and Bertsdorf (23 minutes) to Jonsdorf (half an hour); Bus route 6 from Zittau via Olbersdorf to Oybin (30–40 minutes); Bus route 1 runs approximately every hour from Zittau via Mittelherwigsdorf (10–15 minutes), Hainewalde (20–25 minutes) and Großschönau (30–40 minutes) to Waltersdorf (45 minutes). The number 13 bus runs a couple of times a day between Großschönau, Jonsdorf, Oybin and Lückendorf (Großschönau – Jonsdorf approx. 25 minutes; Jonsdorf – Oybin 20 minutes; Oybin – Lückendorf 7 minutes).

By bicycle

The Umbindehaus cycle path connects Zittau, Olbersdorf, Jonsdorf, Waltersdorf, Großschönau with each other (and further to Oderwitz, Herrnhut, Ebersbach, Neusalza-Spremberg). There are also other recommended cycling routes in the region.

On foot

The Zittau Mountains are primarily a destination for hikers. There are signposted hiking trails between all places in the region.

  • Listen - With a height of 793 m, the pointed volcanic cone is the highest mountain in the range. From the summit terrace on the mountain top you have a beautiful view. There is no place to stop for refreshments directly on the mountain. The border between the Czech Republic and Germany runs over the mountain top.   • Althörnitz Castle: The castle, which was built in the 17th century, now serves as a hotel and is still a popular destination.

  • Climb - The Zittau Mountains are Saxony's second largest climbing area after Saxon Switzerland. In the rock database of the German Alpine Club there are around 110 for the Zittau Mountains Rocks captured.
  • Winter sports - Due to its eastern location in Germany, the Zittau Mountains are quite snow reliable. There are a few smaller ski lifts. The longest slope on the Lausche is 500 m long. For fans of Nordic skiing, there are a total of 40 km of ski hiking trails in the mountains. At around 19 km, the “Zittauer Gebirge” ski hiking trail is the longest.
