The Swiss Autobahn 9 (A 9) begins near the French-Swiss border in the Jura and leads from Ballaigues initially as a non-directional car road (also Europastraße 23) Orbe to Autobahn 1that she meets at the Échangeur Essert-Pittet. At the Échangeur Villars-Ste-Croix it separates from the A1 again and leads north Lausanne past. East of Lausanne it runs parallel to the north bank of the Geneva lake and takes the at the Échangeur La Veyre Autobahn 12 on. She also cites (now part of Europastraße 27) Montreux passing in the valley of the river Rhône and happens Aigle VD and Saint-Maurice VS. At Martigny Nationalstrasse 21 branches off to Great Saint Bernard (Grand Saint-Bernard) and ins Aosta Valley from. The A9 follows the sharp bend of the Rhône River to the northeast and now leads as European route 62 Sion, the capital of the canton of Valais, over to the Upper Valais. In the Pfynwald east of Sierre reaches the German-speaking area. The motorway expansion currently ends (2021) at the junction into the Lötschental, but is with the bypass of Visp until the beginning of the ascent to Simplon Pass under construction.
