Cabo Girão is a cliff with a lookout point Madeira.

The Cabo Girão (Cape of Repentance) is a Cliffs in the south of Madeira between the municipalities Câmara de Lobos and Quinta Grande. With a height of 589 m, it is one of the highest cliffs in Europe, the wall of which drops almost perpendicular to the sea. Down by the sea, some cultivation areas offer an eye-catcher, but in earlier times it was difficult to reach to provide basic supplies for the population.

According to a legend, the Portuguese explorers interrupted the island João Gonçalves Zarco here their exploration of the coastline from (therefore Cape of Reversal), because the imposing cliffs seemed too inhospitable to them to land.

By bus

The operator Rodoeste Cabo Girao drives many connections between the capital Funchal and Ribeira Brava at. The safest route is line 154, the other connections do not go to Cabo Girao on all routes.

In the street

The Cabo Girao is located below the ER-101 coastal motorway between Funchal and Ribeira Grande, exactly between exit 3 (Quinta Grande) and exit 4 (Camara de Lobos). The approach is well signposted and can be reached more easily from Quinta Grande, while the cable car to the sea can be reached more easily from Camara de Lobos.

Of course, the cape itself is the sight, but it can be explored in various ways.

  • Cabo Girao denotes the Viewing platform on the cliff itself. It has meanwhile gone from a stone walled terrace to a modern one Skywalk rebuilt. It was inaugurated at the end of 2012 and, with its glass floor, naturally offers dizzying views into the depths.
  • Behind the skywalk halfway to the street leads a lift to the sea level Faja dos Padres, in order to be able to take a look at this natural monument from below.
  • In the district of Sitio do Rancho (towards Camara de Lobos) one leads Cable car(teleferico) also down to the coast.

The pilgrimage church Capela de Nossa Senhora de Fátima is located in the immediate vicinity. The concrete-friendly new building from 1974 replaced the original chapel from 1931.

  • hike. Above the cape runs the Levada do Norteso that Cabo Girao is also part of a hike between Boa Morte (north of Quinta Grande) and Estreito de Camara de Lobos can be explored.
  • Paragliding. Several schools start flights from Cabo Girao and then connect the return via the cable car.

Along the country roads to the Cape to the Cape there are a few smaller shops and of course the usual souvenir stands at the lookout point itself. But self-caterers and shoppers are in Funchal, Camara de Lobos or Ribeira Brava better served.

There are a number of accommodations of all categories and designs in the immediate vicinity.

At sea level below the cliff there is a tourist facility with a restaurant and holiday apartments, in which of course it becomes very quiet after 6:00 pm when all traffic connections to the environment are switched off and it can only be reached by boat because the cable car or lift has ceased operations (see above sights)
