Porto Moniz is a village on the island Madeira and belongs to Portugal.

Porto Moniz is the capital of the district of the same name, which consists of the communities Achadas da Cruz, Porto Moniz, Ribeira da Janela and Seixal. The village is located at the north-western end of Madeira. The naturally formed lava basins above the actual coastline, which are unique in Madeira, are particularly well-known for tourists.
In addition to the original focus on agriculture and fishing, the population is increasingly dependent on the tourist significance of this special feature. This is also met by the establishment of further attractions such as the science museum or the renowned aquarium, which deals specifically with the marine world of Madeira. But especially the easy accessibility via the coastal motorway has caused a small upswing here. In the street
The coastal motorway ER-101, which comes from Funchal, currently ends in Porto Moniz Ribeira Brava in a long tunnel the central highlands below Encumeada Pass to Sao Vicente crosses. Because of the favorable connection via the motorway, all destinations on the island can be reached via excursions. In the vicinity you should not miss:
- Levada da Janela, above the Ribeira de Janela (start in Lamaceiros above the hydroelectric power station). A distance of about 12 km. Several tunnels (flashlight) as far as you want. If it can be organized because of the way back, ascent to Paul da Serra (Galhano / Fonte do Bispo) approx. 4 km. Or just start here.
- Achadas da Cruz. Adventurous ride with the cable car from the cliffs down to the sea.
- A winding road leads from Porto Moniz to the plateau Paúl da Serra. From here you get to a valley gorge in which the small village Rabaçal is surrounded by beautiful hiking trails and levadas.
- In the neighboring village Seixal you can explore less known, but at least as spectacular lava basins.
