Ponta Delgada is a municipality in the district Sao Vicente on the island Madeira.
background
Ponta Delgada is a small coastal community on the north coast of Madeira and belongs to the administrative area of São Vicente. The population lives mainly from agriculture. In earlier times, sugar cane was an essential factor here, but this industry could not withstand the fall in prices on the world markets, as some of the dilapidated plants still bear testimony to today. Viticulture is currently being promoted instead.
Ponta Delgada is located at the western end of the only stretch of coast towards Santana that has not yet been tunnelled by highways. This is precisely where its tourist importance lies. Adventurous self-drivers can experience the romance and narrowness of the original traffic routes on Madeira for the last time.
getting there
The rental car booked at the airport should be the most sensible alternative for the visitor. Apart from package tours with appropriate feeders, São Vicente can only be reached with great effort and time using public transport.
By plane
Madeira's only one Santa Cruz Airport Ponta Delgada can be reached in about an hour on the motorway via Funchal and Ribeira Brava. Once the section between Santana and São Vicente is completed, this travel time will be cut in half.
By bus
The operator Rodoeste connects the place with the capital Funchal several times a day via line 6. The travel time to Funchal varies between 90 and 150 minutes.
In the street
As long as the ring closure of the ER 101 coastal motorway between Santana and São Vicente is not completed, the fastest way to get there is via the north-south connection mach Ribeira Brava. The connection via the old coastal road only has the tourist experience value mentioned.
