The Madeira's southeast coast describes goals Madeira in the "lower right" area of the island apart from the capital Funchal. Most vacationers just as bookers of package tours are here in Funchal or Caniço find your domicile. Accordingly, the best public transport infrastructure can be found here, and your own vehicle is not essential. Exploring the entire island is possible without any problems, even if a rental car would be the best option.

From an administrative point of view, the south-east comprises the districts of Santa Cruz, Funchal and Câmara de Lobos. Levada walks that are easy to reach can also be undertaken here in coastal areas. Bathing facilities are provided by the hotel complexes on the coast, otherwise the stony bays, which are often hidden under steep cliffs, are sometimes difficult to access.

- Santa Cruz Not only is it home to Madeira's only airport, which has become world-famous for its offshore runway. The small communities in the hinterland connect easily accessible hiking trails along the levadas. A modern water park is also located here.
- In Caniço de Baixo you will find most of the island's hotel complexes, which often offer good bathing opportunities, are within easy reach of the capital and mostly offer easy-to-book excursion options.
- The basket weaver center Camacha offers a large-scale combination of souvenir shop and museum and is the starting or ending point for hikes along the Levada dos Tornos.
- The former fishing village Câmara de Lobos has now integrated into the greater Funchal area. The town center with the small port is still worth a visit and the Sunday market still an authentic shopping experience in the market hall of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos.
- The Cabo Girão is one of the highest cliffs in Europe with a height of 580 m. The Skywalk, which was newly built at the end of 2012, makes this view a dizzying experience.
getting there
Most vacationers are on Madeira's only one Airport Arrive Santa Cruz. From there, package tour operators offer direct transfers to your place of residence. Individual tourists pick up their rental car here or use the airport buses to Funchal. The ER 101 coastal motorway, which is heavily tunneled under, allows you to reach every coastal town with your own vehicle within a maximum of one hour. Reaching more remote places from there can, however, be more tedious than expected from the map image via winding country roads.

Bus connections between Santa Cruz Airport, the Caniço de Baixo hotel area and the capital Funchal as well as to Câmara de Lobos are well equipped and very frequent. For the rest of the island, however, they are based on the needs of the population (school hours, working hours) and are often only served 1-2 times a day.
To get to know the whole island, a rental car is the better alternative. For hikers there are individual taxi companies who specialize in a drop-off and pick-up service for this clientele.

The average maximum daily temperature fluctuates between 19 degrees in December and January and 25 degrees in July and August. Usually it rains more often in the northern part of the island than in the south. This fact has led to the construction of the typical levadas, which are supposed to direct the water from the rainy northern regions to the south. Ultimately, however, there are many typical microclimates on Madeira. This means that the current weather situation at any point on the island can be completely different from what the viewer's current position would suggest. In Madeira, you are never safe from surprises, both positive and negative.
