background

Cliffs at Ponta do Pargo

Ponta do Pargo, Madeira's westernmost municipality, sits enthroned on rugged cliffs with a wide view of the Atlantic. The population lives mainly from agriculture. Administratively it belongs to the district of Calheta and lies exactly on the border with Porto Moniz, to which it is closer in terms of tourism.
Compared to other places, Ponta do Pargo has little spectacular to offer, so that most visitors will only get to know the place as part of a tour of the island. It is located on the ER 101 circular coastal road, which has not yet been developed as a motorway, so that it should be a bit remote as a base for a tour of the whole island.

getting there

By plane

Madeira's only one Santa Cruz Airport is located on the eastern coast. From there the currently only motorway connection leads via Funchal, Ribeira Brava, Sao Vicente in approx. 60 minutes to Porto Moniz. From there it is about 30 minutes on a winding country road to Ponta do Pargo.

By bus

The operator Rodoeste connects the place on line 80 once a day from Funchal via Calheta to Porto Moniz. Line 142 connects Funchal with Ponta do Pargo several times a day, but mostly in the early morning hours. The travel time to Funchal is around 2 1/2 hours. There are no local connections.

In the street

Ponta do Sol is on the ER-101 coastal road that encircles the entire island and Calheta in the southwest with Porto Moniz connects to the northwest. At these two locations, however, the highway expansion of the road ends with rapid tunneling. Along the entire west coast, the country road follows the topographical coastline, so that a journey time of at least one hour should be allowed for connecting these two places. Ponta do Sol is in the northern third near Porto Moniz.

By boat

There is a marina and a sailing club in Porto Moniz.
