Geographical notes

Located in Cavallina Valley, near the homonymous lakes of Endine and Gaiano, is about 32 kilometers from BergamoRecent studies would place the origins of the town in Roman times, as can be deduced from some small traces left by the Romans themselves and from the toponym Palate = Palat (Palatium) of a place located between Fanöf and Roa and from the same adjective Gaiano (hence Piangaiano). However, some hypotheses would like to trace the birth of the first urban agglomerations back to the Etruscan age, even if there is no concrete evidence in this regard.

The municipal territory in later times was affected by the passage of the Lombards first and then the Franks, a period from which the first written document that mentions the country dates back: drawn up in the year 1032, it mentions the existence of a castle. The latter was one of the many buildings built to defend the territory from the numerous incursions perpetrated by the factions of the Guelphs and Ghibellines, interested in acquiring dominance.

The villages of Endine and Gaiano were in fact placed in a strategic position, between the end of the Cavallina Valley and the entrance to the Val Camonica, making them attractive to anyone wishing to gain dominance over the valley. This situation put an end to the arrival of the Republic of Venice which from the beginning of the fifteenth century allowed the population to live a more peaceful existence thanks to a far-sighted social and economic policy. From that moment there were no significant episodes in the small town, immersed in its daily life. Then followed the French and Austrian dominations without directly affecting the village.

The municipality of Figadelli, already included in the canton of Endine in April 1797, was united with Monasterolo del Castello in March 1798.

What see

There are numerous buildings that characterize the municipal area, some of which bring the mind back to the medieval era, in which the town was equipped with elements of defense: this is the case of the castle, of which some remains remain incorporated in constructions of the following centuries and of the tower which was incorporated into the bell tower of the parish church of Endine.

  • Church of San Giorgio. The parish church is mentioned in documents from 1260, even if it has substantial renovations that took place in the following centuries. Inside it houses works of undoubted value: among all the main altar made by the Fantoni family, and the paintings by Domenico Carpinoni (The Madonna Assunta, San Rocco, San Remigio and San Sebastiano) and Gian Paolo Cavagna stand out. On a side altar on the right there is a wooden statue depicting San Remigio, bishop of Reims, in the act of baptizing Clovis, king of the Franks.
  • Church of San Remigio. Built near the lake in the 15th century, it was rebuilt and enlarged two centuries later in thanksgiving after the plague wave of 1630, and it also preserves paintings by Carpinoni, among which a Madonna and Child enthroned and the Saints Remigio stands out. and Alessandro. In the mid-nineteenth century it was equipped with a neoclassical portico that altered the sober elegance of the seventeenth-century facade.
  • Churches of the hamlets. Worthy of note are also the parish church of the San Felice hamlet which, dedicated to San Michele, according to tradition, preserves some relics of the patron saint, as well as some well-made furnishings; the old parish church dedicated to the Trinity which dominates the Rova Alta locality; the parish church of Valmaggiore in neo-Romanesque style, dedicated to San Giovanni.
