Trescore Balneario is a city of Lombardy.

To know

It is currently a large commercial, artistic and spa center. In fact, it owes its fame to the thermal establishments which, already known by the Romans for their effective therapy, were enhanced by Bartolomeo Colleoni and have undergone numerous renovations.

Background

It has always been the main center of the lowlands Cavallina Valley and, over the centuries, the administrative capital. Named in a document of 996 with the form Trescurium. In other documents and maps, a place called "Leuceris" existed near the place where the present town stands. For this reason it is not known exactly the origin of the name and the exact name of the ancient village that stood in the same places in ancient times.

How to get around

What see

  • 1 Suardi Tower. Remarkable are the architectural traces and the monuments belonging to a little bit of all eras. In the spacious square of Trescore, with a regular pattern, the mighty Torre Suardi from the 13th century dominates, restored in the 18th century to its original height.
  • 2 Parish church of San Pietro. In the main street you will immediately encounter the neoclassical parish church of San Pietro with its beautiful dome frescoed by Vittorio Manini, where interesting paintings by the Venetians Antonio Balestra and Sebastiano Ricci and the Bergamo Ponziano Loverini are preserved. The marble main altar is attributed to the sculptor Bartolomeo Manni di Rovio.
There are numerous subsidiary churches, some from the Romanesque period, others from the Baroque period, which preserve valuable works of art.
Lorenzo Lotto, frescoes in the Suardi Chapel
  • 3 Suardi Chapel. Trescore is known for a jewel: the frescoes by Lorenzo Lotto in the Suardi chapel located inside the private villa of the Suardi descendants, along the Tonale state road. The cycle of frescoes is dedicated to the stories of Santa Barbara and Santa Brigida and commissioned by the Suardi family in 1524. In the center of the fresco Christ is depicted as a vine that produces the Saints and Doctors of the Church as fruits.
The back wall (east) has a panel that evokes the stories of the Magdalene and one that recalls those of St. Catherine of Alexandria, surmounted by the continuum of the theory of ancient prophets]: Habakkuk, the Sibyl of Tiburtina, Zephaniah, the Phrygian Sibyl, Daniel, the Persian Sibyl, Moses, each with still legible scrolls.
The chapel, which was located on the road that connected Bergamo to the Lake Iseo across the Val Cavallina, it had already existed since the 15th century. Around 1523 Lotto received the commission to decorate the oratory from Count Giovan Battista Suardi and moved directly to the locality.
The frescoes were completed by the summer of 1524.
Count Gianforte Suardi, in the nineteenth century, connected the chapel, located in the park, to the villa itself with the construction of a covered corridor. On that occasion, changes were also made that changed the entrance to the chapel: previously the faithful were immediately in front of the north wall, the one with the Christ-vine.
